When mingling with the crew, Torinn finds they are pleasant enough, if a bit gruff and difficult to wrangle much information from. Still, Gourmert is happy to tell him tales of his adventures, when he's not busy stuffing his face with food from his satchel.

It is nearly sundown when the calm sea air is broken by an unnatural-sounding clattering from the base of the ship. This is followed by the sounds of something scuttling very quickly along the sides of the ship, which prompts yelling from the captain, "Adventurers! Brace yourselves, I think we've got an infestation!"

Myn is the first to spot it: three giant lobster-like beasts scuttling up the side of the ship, moving with an unnatural quickness. Each of them is covered by a carapace which is a deep purple which fades to red as it ends its segments, and they move on two sets of legs and use a pair of claws to grasp and pull themselves up the side of the ship. Between these legs and the claws are three sets of smaller, pincer-like appendages. Of the three, two are a bit larger than the last, with one over-sized claw which they favor slightly. The third has smaller claws, but a vicious-looking stinger on its tail.

Michael and Torinn spot four more of the creatures quickly thereafter: two more of the smaller ones, one larger one, and one that is different than the ones Myn saw--it's as big as the crushers, but it doesn't have an oversized claw, and its carapace segments reflect the evening light in strange color patterns.

The smell of rotten seafood is in the air as the battle is joined.

Okay, so, you all can take ONE ACTION to prepare yourselves (standard or move or minor), I suggest you equip your weapons, shields, or implements, as the case may be. Go ahead and roll initiative in the post as well.

Nature check for information on the Crauds.

The adventurers, for the most part, reach for their weapons and other tools of combat in response to the aquatic attack, though the shaman unleashes a potent psionic attack on the western crustaceans (yes I realize going by the direction you all SHOULD be heading it's actually east but we'll refer to it was west in this case to prevent confusion), which results in cracking noises as the force of the blast pierces their carapaces.

Gourmert draws back in fear and yelps, "Ack! The sea be attackin', run for ye lives!" and pulls out an over-sized instrument that looks like a cross between a giant fork and a big spoon.

One of the craud attackers immediately seizes the initiative and pulls itself onto the deck adjacent to the warlord, and snips at him with its massive claw. However, Michael manages to barely deflect the blow with his freshly-drawn shield.

Bernkastel: (Nature) "Bernkastel," you know that these creatures are crauds, opportunistic and vicious ocean-dwelling aquatic beasts.
A great many myths surround crauds, spread by superstitious sailors. Some say they are divine punishment upon foolish mortals who do not pay the sea deities proper respect, and some say they are the forerunners of an invading undersea army. However, most pragmatic observers simply label them as mindless beasts that attack humanoids only when overfishing and pollution have robbed them of easier meals.
Whatever the case, crauds are opportunistic predators that raid seaside communities and oceangoing vessels on a regular basis, and often repeat attacks at the same location if they are not eradicated. Sometimes they lurk in abandoned settlements and attack travelers that enter the area.

Michael hacks at the nearby craud, but can't seem to land a good, intuitive hit.

The first craud impaler is unable to lurch very far due to the worm infestation, so it settles for simply reaching with its quite long tail stinger and tearing a hole in the warlock's shoulder, causing it to bleed heavily.

The craud impaler near the dragonborn, under the influence of the paladin's defender aura, simply stabs him through the armor (finding a weak point in the paladin's defenses), also ripping open a bleeding wound. Torinn is bewildered and off balance as the king scuttles along the outside of the ship before taking up a position at the head of the ship, and Torinn stumbles forward, entranced by the glittering carapace, before being caught brutally off-guard by a savage blow from the king's claw, leaving the cavalier bleeding badly.

The north-most impaler dashes across the deck to the defenseless-looking psionic shaman and unleashes a pair of claw attacks, followed by a hit from its stinger, leaving her a bloody mess.

One of the larger crauds jumps onto the deck and scuttles up the stairs to confront the warlock, crushing him in its gigantic claw, drawing Myn's blood.

"Bernkastel" finds herself bleeding quite heavily now...

Craud Impaler 1 takes 3 necrotic damage from darkworm feast.
Craud Impaler 1 hits Myn with impale for 8 damage and ongoing 5 damage (save ends).
Craud Impaler 3 hits Torinn with impale for 8 damage and ongoing 5 damage (save ends).
Craud King's angler's lure hits Torinn, sliding him 3 squares into a space adjacent to the Craud King. Torinn is marked by the Craud King until the end of the Craud King's next turn.
Craud King's claw CRITS Torinn for 18 damage, and the Craud King slides Torinn 1 square.
Craud Impaler 2's claw hits Bernkastel twice and its impale hits Bernkastel once for 18 total damage and ongoing 5 damage (save ends).
Craud crusher 2's claw hits Myn for 12 damage, and Myn is grabbed.
Bernkastel takes ongoing 5 damage at the start of her turn.

The shaman's loyal spirit companion appears in the fray, and she channels a healing spell through it to aid herself and the warlock. She retreats from the battle, and the impaler swipes at her as she moves away, but misses, and takes the opportunity to scuttle across the deck.

Twice, the psionic-shaman rips apart the fabric of reality across the battlefield, and manages to scramble the position of two of the crauds. However, she is unable to move her primary targets.

The crew shout out encouragements, but maintain their positions. Gourmert, for his part, appears to be quivering. He slides into a flanking position with Michael, but covers himself with his arms in a defensive pose.

The remaining large craud pulls itself onto the deck and saunters over to Myn. With a massive blow from its large claw, it knocks the warlock to the side and leaves him sprawled on the deck, still in the grip of the other crusher, barely conscious.

Bernkastel summons her spirit companion to P-10.

Sureiya hurls his sword once at the king, which hits, but his second attempt fails. Not seeming to care, the half-orc draws his second sword and moves up to the nearby crusher grabbing the warlock, and unleashes a devastating set of blows which leave the craud crusher reeling, though still solidly in the fight.

The first craud crusher to act acts again, this time seizing Michael swiftly with his massive claw and crushing him in its grip.

Torinn's vision becomes hazy as blood streams down his face.

Sureiya's twin strike misses the craud king once and hits the craud king once for a total of 9 damage.
Sureiya spends an action point! Sureiya draws his luckblade bastard sword.
Sureiya moves and uses jaws of the wolf on craud crusher 2, which crits once and hits once for 42 damage total.

Torinn teeters on his feet, swaying dizzily as he wipes the blood from his eyes. It sounded like things weren't faring much better for everyone else, either. A brief glance shows him Michael was grabbed and the warlock was pinned, near death's door.

That tears it. Nobody here is dying on his watch. He hollers and smashes his blade into the carapace of the craud that distracted him earlier, shouting,
"Don't give up! We can win this!"

Torinn draws upon his inner reserves of strength, imparting the energy to the downed warlock, "Get back on your feet, man! You can't save your homeland from that tyrant if you're dead!" And that left the craud restraining him. Torinn glared at the craud king and unleashes a torrent of lightning from his maw, then slips away and barrels down on the craud crusher. His weapon burns with radiant energy that lances through the craud's thick shell as though it weren't even there as Torinn makes a mighty slash at it.

Michael slashes the craud even as he is grabbed, and his call is heard by Gourmert, who manages to skewer the encrustation rather soundly even from his defensive position.

Torinn's strike inspirts Myn to hang in the fight just a bit longer, and he then turns and breaths lightning on the craud king, which engulfs it solidly. The dragonborn then swiftly charges the crusher, and though his blow misses, a bolt of holy energy blasts the craud grappling the warlock regardless. Torinn is still bleeding from the impalement, however.

As for Myn, he is in the grip of a gigantic crab-beast, lying on the ground, bleeding heavily, and has two of the beasts looming over him. Things aren't looking too great for the half-elf.

Michael's vengeance is mine hits craud crusher 3 for 7 damage. Gourmert's spork hits craud crusher 3 for 10 damage.
Torinn's strike of hope hits craud king for 7 damage, and Myn gains 9 temporary hit points.
Torinn uses his virtue of sacrifice, spending a healing surge to allow Myn to regain 11 hit points. Torinn also uses [yellow]dragon breath[/yellow], which hits the craud king for [yellow]2 lightning damage[/yellow] and subjecting it to Torinn's divine sanction.
Torinn spends an action point! Torinn regains 5 hit points from Michael's inspiring presence.
Torinn uses his holy smite, and charges the craud crusher 2. He misses, but the craud crusher 2 still takes 6 radiant damage.
Myn takes ongoing 5 damage.

Michael shouts some inspiration to the dragonborn, granting the paladin full strength once more. He then frees himself from the craud's grasp, and slashes at the beast twice, drawing the creature's blood and bolstering the defenses of all nearby allies!

The most injured impaler attempts to unleash a frenzy of claws on the fallen warlock, but Michael's warning shout allows Myn to roll out of the way just in time. Another impaler moves into a flanking position of the half-orc, and rips into the ranger's flesh with its claws before impaling his shoulder with its vicious stinger.

The craud king attempts to lure Michael to its grasp, but the sturdy warlord ignores its attempt, and radiant energy sears it in retaliation from the dragonborn's sanction. The king settles for scuttling into a flank and attempting to pulverize both Sureiya and Torinn with its claws, but both attacks are swiftly dodged. The remaining craud impaler and crusher gang up on the warlord, slashing him with claws and again enclosing Michael in a massive claw.

Michael's inspiring word allows Torinn to spend a healing surge and regain 26 hit points.
Michael escapes from the grab successfully.
Michael uses a melee basic attack hits the craud crusher 3 for 11 damage.
Michael spends an action point!

Bernkastel's spirit companion discorporates and infuses the half-orc with vigor, and he then strikes the nearby craud crusher down. Gourmert covers himself in defense as the other crusher moves over the corpse of its fallen ally and tries to grab the dragonborn in its claw, but a swift counterattack from Sureiya and a warning shout from the grabbed warlord allow Torinn to barely block the blow with his shield.

Bernkastel uses spirit infusion. Sureiya's melee basic attack hits the craud crusher 2 for 23 damage with furious assault, which kills it.
Bernkastel calls her spirit companion back.
Gorumet uses total defense and shifts 1 square.
Craud crusher 1 shifts 1 square and attacks Torinn with claw. It would hit, but a combination of the defense bonus from bastion of defense and Sureiya's disruptive strike (which hits the crusher for 13 damage) causes it to miss.
Sureiya takes ongoing 5 damage.

Sureiya unleashes a flurry of attacks on the nearby craud crusher, which leaves it heavily damage. Its carapace is cracked in several places, and it staggers slightly as it regains its footing.

The crusher grabbing Michael retaliates with a hefty claw-smash on Torinn, which knocks the paladin clean off his feet and onto his back a few feet away. The tightening grip on Michael also takes its toll.

Torinn is in bad shape.

Sureiya's twin strike and off-hand strike hit the craud crusher three times for 35 total damage with hunter's quarry.
Craud cursher 3's hammerclaw hits Torinn for 22 damage, pushes him 1 square and knocks him prone.

"Is that all you've got?" Torinn taunts, standing back up and menacing the craud that knocked him down and pushed him away. And a dragonborn covered in its own blood is surprisingly menacing. "Craven coward of a crustacean! Know what fate awaits you for attacking us!" Torinn spins around, putting his weight into the next strike as light lances forth and skewers the craud crusher next to him before he soundly smashes it with his blade.

His bleeding wound closes up, spurred on by his righteous resolve, and he levels his blade at the assembled crauds and their king.

"Come at me, then! You don't scare me!"

Michael's hefty blow and words of encouragement slash the craud cleanly through, splitting it in half, and restore Torinn's vitality. The paladin looks ready to fight once more.

One of the remaining impalers attempts to claw at Sureiya twice, but the ranger swiftly dodges the blows. The craud scuttles across the deck even as it misses. The king reels back and slams its claw into the ranger, catching him just as he dodges the impaler's blow, and scores a solid hit. The half-orc looks as though he has barely begun to fight, however, and the last impaler takes this as a sign to attack the warlord instead. One of its claws is parried by the warlord's shield, but it slashes through with the second. The brilliance of the light shining off the king's reflective carapace nearly lures Myn to its grasp, but the warlord's shouts help keep him in the right of mind.

Things are looking up, though the psionic shaman is still bleeding out.

Michael uses inspiring word, which allows Torinn to spend a healing surge and regain 25 hit points.
Michael's warlord's strike hits craud crusher 3 for 26 damage, kills it.
Craud impaler 3 uses claw frenzy, but its claw misses Sureiya twice. It uses scuttle to shift 4 squares.
Craud king's claw hits Sureiya for 14 damage. Sureiya gains 5 temporary HP from his racial trait.
Craud king's angler's lure misses Myn.
Craud impaler 2 uses claw frenzy, and its claw misses Michael once, and hits Michael once for 5 damage.
Bernkastel takes ongoing 5 damage.

The shaman's spirit companion vanishes, infusing her nearby allies with fiery energy, and granting "Bernkastel" a fiery boon as well. A blast of scorching sand also hits the craud king, leaving it vulnerable to further flame attacks.

Gourmert steps away from the fray and cowers, saying, "J-just tell me when it be over!"

Bernkastel's scorching sands deals 6 fire damage to the craud king, and it becomes vulnerable 5 fire. Myn, Bernkastel, Sureiya, and Torinn can choose to deal fire damage with their attacks until the end of Bernkastel's next turn.

The half-orc readies his blades for the king, then slashes with a fiery enchantment, searing the king once and missing once. This draws the king's blood, which reacts with its shiny exterior in a strange way--a strange light reflects off the surface, which must serve as some sort of signal to the other crauds, for both of them immediately lash out with their claws at the nearest adversary. Sureiya manages to dodge the attack, but Michael is now badly wounded after the impaler just barely pierces his chainmail.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume Sureiya chooses to deal fire damage with these attacks.
Sureiya's twin strike hits the craud king once for 20 fire damage, which bloodies it.
When the craud king becomes bloodied, it triggers for the king! Each craud within 5 squares can shift 4 squares, ending this movement closer to the king, and make a basic attack as a free action.
Craud impaler 2 hits Michael with claw for 7 damage (it would have missed, if not for the craud king's blood in the water aura with grants allies a +2 bonus to attack rolls against bloodied enemies).
Craud impaler 3 misses Sureiya with claw.

Myn's your delicious weakness deals 24 fire damage plus 3 psychic damage to the craud king, which kills it.

At the warlord's command, Sureiya slashes his bastard sword through the nearby impaler. Both impalers begin to flee for their lives, the one near the ranger moving carefully at first before scuttling down the deck at top speed.

Michael uses direct the strike. Sureiya's melee basic attack hits the craud impaler 3 for 10 damage.
Both of the impalers begin to retreat. The impaler 3 shifts 1 square then starts scuttling down the deck as quickly as possible, while the impaler 2 just runs away at top speed.

With Myn's bleeding stopped, it appears the battle is over.

Feel free to take a short rest at this point. However, keep in mind I may not grant an extended rest for a while, even if days pass. This is a conscious decision on my part to separate game mechanics and time passing to allow for more challenging adventuring days.

The captain nods at you, and bows in thanks, saying, "Thank goodness for ya adventurers, no tellin' what would've happened had ya not been around."

Gourmert pokes one of the dead crauds with his spork-like instrument, then nods, satisfied that it's dead. "Ugh, smells awful. Ah wonder if these things be good eatin'? Can't imagine so, wit' tha smell."

The adventurers take a breather to restore their strength after the warlock's wound clots (seriously, magically stop bleeding, who's ever heard of such a thing). The captain calls a few deckhands from below deck to help dump the craud bodies overboard, and Gourmert seems turned off enough by the smell of the beasts to not object.

The day passes, and you are all treated to a rather pleasant, if spartan meal with the sailors, which includes some spiced bread, crab, and a hearty chowder. The merchants are apparently dining elsewhere. The sailors work out a rotation with you for the night sailing, so that some of you will stay on deck while the others rest.

The night passes without incident as well, and then another, until about five days total pass, and in the mid-morning of the fifth day you find yourself approaching a bustling seaside city. This must be Waterdeep.

You all gain the benefit of a short rest. If you want to post anything you've done in the meantime during the journey, I'll give a brief pause to do so.

As the boat get near to the city, the orc spend some time thinking about how quickly things have changed; He is on a quest with some adventurers he barely know and they need to avoid a war between two empires. That's a lot of stress for an inexperienced ranger as him, and even worse, he is traveling with people he doesn't feel uncomfortable with, that's a whole new feeling for him.

The Warlord wasn't expecting to reach Waterdeep so fast, but that fighting the other day must have ruined his sense of time or something. The meal that the sailors treated them to was a lot better than the stuff that the inn had, even if it was seafood, something he didn't normally liked. He gives his regards to them if him and the party are to depart from the ship soon.
