OOC: I don't actually remember what chapter/part we're on so I'm improvising.

After a harrowing encounter with a group of undead monstrosities within the cavern system they discovered, the party decided to temporarily step back outside and ponder their next move.

A more thorough investigation of the cavern was clearly in order, as the deserted orcish camp with signs of bodies being dragged from it into the cavern was quite suspicious. Furthermore, the undead inside were clearly orcs when they were alive. There's still no sign of Thelkra either (none of the now-dead orcs looked very much like her, though some were female). There's a good chance that whatever is inside this cave is connected to the caravan attacks that the Flaming Fist is concerned about.

OOC: You all receive 300 XP from the encounter with the undead orcs. You were going to win pretty much, as I don't think anyone was in any real danger of dying and they were down to one badly-injured unit, one very weak unit and a caster who'd used all of its big spells. It was just going to be a rather big drain on resources.

The idea came up that I should give everyone a chance to mention what their character did after the battle, so I'm going to do that. Your characters can discuss their thoughts on the matter as well. We'll proceed when you're ready.

Torinn was more than a little shaken by how quickly he was rendered near helpless during the encounter. No longer is he quite so assured of his inability to die, or be thrust into a situation where he is powerless to stop his foes and protect his allies.

Torinn retrieved three things from the cave when they returned to make camp. The first was his Farbond Spellblade. The second was the sack of herbs that had been sitting in the back of the cave, which he laid out for everyone else to examine. He was busy with item three, a bunch of rocks he was using to fashion himself a crude and mundane holy symbol made in the shape of a small shield with a dragon emblem engraved on the front, created from a single stone. It's not much to look at, but it does help restore his faith.

The big sack of herbs is rather hefty and requires some strength to lift, but Torinn is able to carry it from the cave with a bit of effort.

A closer inspection of the bag of herbs reveals it to be a mix of herbs and other various reagents used in arcane and nature rituals. There is about 960gp worth of alchemical reagents for arcane rituals in the bag, and 360gp worth of herbs for nature-based rituals.

But that's silly. Eladrin don't sleep. They trance. And Sariel made a point out of never trancing while walking.

Exploring the cavern reveals nothing that you didn't see before. You pass over the corpses of the undead you recently destroyed on your way to the edge of the cavern.

There is apparently nothing further in this direction, but you do find a hole in the ground in the northwest section of the area in which you fought the undead. The darkness extends far down, though it might be possible to see if the light spell extended to the lip of the cavern.

The cave remains eerily quiet, though the air coming from the pit seems slightly moist.

What is revealed below appears to be a shallow body of underground water, though it seems to get deeper to the west. Most of the water appears to be shallow enough to be simply waded through, however. The nature of the hole blocks your light from extending far.

The ground below is around 40 feet down--you'd need something to climb or risk injury by fall. Once you got a light source down there, you'd be able to see more of the cavern, but throwing a sunrod down there risks it breaking and malfunctioning.

OOC: 40' is 8 squares downward. Your current elevation is 8 squares above the ground below, in other words. The black-outlined area is the position of the hole above. Any square of water that is NOT marked by difficult terrain is deep enough that you have to swim to pass through it.

When Myn descends with the sunrod, the chamber is fully illuminated. It appears that the area of deeper water is relatively small, so the underground pool is likely not too deep. It is, however, quite murky and difficult to see through, even when illuminated by the sunrod's light.

In addition, the only other passage out of this area to the west appears to be marked with a large circle of arcane symbols. This appears to be another magic circle, similar to the ones you saw when the caravan was attacked. The fact that it is visible could mean that it's already active.

Though none of those looking around can see much of interest, you do hear sounds coming from the water. It is not as still as you'd expect to find an underground pool.

Furthermore, while the half-orc cannot actually find further traps, Myn is fairly certain that arcane circle could BE some kind of trap.

Torinn judges the water to be shallow enough that there is no need to swim across if the correct path is taken. And is somewhat irked to be thought of as a mere utility.

"No," the dragonborn declines, "It's not necessary. We can simply wade through or leap across the shallow end over there." The dragon born points to the northern end of the shallows, where the marsh water is thinnest.

As the group descends the ropes, Myn approaches the arcane circle and attempts to divine its purpose.

Arcana (Myn): You believe that this is a somewhat hastily-prepared ritual circle that will activate when something passes over it. It will attempt to push the creature out of the circle. The second, inner circle has a separate purpose, which appears to be to summon something from another plane. Given the simple nature of the circle, you assume it would probably be a lesser extra-planar creature or three at most. You believe they are hastily-prepared because they are still visible--the caster did not have time to properly hide them.

When Torinn wades into the water, he feels as though it "tugs" at him briefly, but upon leaping out he feels no ill effects.

Attempting to disable the magical circle without triggering it is a skill challenge. Arcana, Religion, Heal, and Nature are the relevant skills for this challenge (in other words, any skill that can be used in a ritual). When any of you makes the first attempt to disable the circle, we'll begin initiative.

OOC: Bern, I can't move your spirit companion there. The rules for conjuration says you must keep line of effect to it, which means it can't be positioned in such a way that you can't see it from the hole, basically. Otherwise, it vanishes at the end of your action. Also, for your move action, where do you intend to move?

As the warlock begins to unravel the ritual, his first attempts to read the runes that comprise the magic circle prove successful--you are one step closer to dispelling the magic.

However, as the magic circle swells and activates, something else in the cavern reacts. Three massive, fleshy tentacles reach out from the underground pool, and writhe about threateningly.

The two deep tentacles in front are thick, and their exterior appears leathery and jagged. The influence tentacle in the back is thinner, but the edge glows with sickly green energy.

Immediately, the nearest tentacle reaches out and smashes the paladin to the ground. As it draws back, the dragonborn finds himself bound in its grasp. Torinn takes 15 damage and is grabbed.

Moreover, all of you feel a weakening aura overpowering you; its source seems to be the second tough-looking tentacle. You feel as though this influence is due to no enemies being near it... See the notes on "Diminish Power."

They are known as poor summons due to their lack of mobility, and thus are rarely intentionally called into this world. In all of Toril, the only places where one could expect to find such tentacles is in areas affected by the Spellplague, where the separation between the planes is very weak.

Throughout Toril, there are many underground regions that were drastically altered by the Spellplague. With the proper magic, these areas can serve as gateways to other planes, like the Shadowfell or the Feywild. While it is nearly impossible for most creatures to pass between the planes even in such places without very powerful rituals, certain extraplanar beings can easily pass or reach between worlds in these plaguechanged lands with just a small magical "nudge." These tentacles are believed to be appendages of unknown eldritch horrors inhabiting another plane, and reach through places where the barrier between planes is weak to attack and dominate mortals on the other side.

The larger deep tentacles are powerful physical attackers that grab and crush anything in their reach, and emit a powerful aura to weaken foes at range if they cannot reach a target. When injured, they tend to throw whatever they have grabbed at the nearest wall and aim for a new target. The smaller influence tentacle possesses great psychic power, and can blast foes in an area with psychic energy, and uses psychic charm and fear-based afflictions to control an enemy's movement. When an ailing enemy recovers, the tentacle seizes that moment of weakness to attempt to completely dominate their mortal mind.

Thrashing in the grip of the unnatural horror that has him bound, Torinn makes his declaration of challenge to all the abominations that emerged from the depths of the cavern - his words etched in lightning.

"Let the lady go, you fiends!" He slashes a deep cut into the tentacle binding him, paralyzing it under the power of his divine declaration. "Harm even one of my companions again and I'll make you regret it!" The tentacles bear the mark of his sanction, compelling them to strike him instead or suffer repercussions.

Bound up as he is, Torinn clutches his faux holy symbol, muttering, "Bahamut, give me strength," calling on inner reserves of vigor to keep him going. He may need it.

"Don't despair, Sureiya!"

Torinn grants the ranger a small blessing to overcome his affliction. Taking a cue from the warlord, Torinn wades into the murky water, moving up to a flanking position opposite Michael. A defiant roar is all he needs to show his enemies he will still make them pay if they ignore him as he raises his sword and slashes. His strike just glances the tentacle, but after calling upon his inner reserves, he slashes it deeply, crippling it.

Torinn rises from his prone state, clears the ranger's affliction with a quick blessing, and then moves around to flank the flailing tentacle. Despite having to swim through deeper water in order to reach it, his blow connects, and renews the sanction placed on all three tentacles.

Sureiya's granted saving throw succeeds.
Astaroth successfully swims to F-12 and his valorous smite hits deep tentacle 2 for 7 damage. All the tentacles are sanctioned.

Myn, no longer concerned with the tentacles, proceeds to release an especially large burst of magic at the weakening circle. Confident that that was enough to stop it, he re-concerns himself with said tentacles, moving to the other side of the pool and unleashing yet another curse at the one in the back.

As the warlock strides forward and places a curse on the psychic tentacle in the rear, the arcane markings comprising the summoning circle fade from the cavern floor.

The deep tentacle thrashes desperately, but manages to miss all of its targets.

Myn successfully dispels the ritual circle, ending the skill challenge.
Deep tentacle 2's thrash misses Torinn, Bernkastel, Sureiya, and Michael (seriously, never seen so many bad d20 rolls in a row).

With the aid of her helpful spirit companion, the shaman restores her own vitality as well as the vitality of the somewhat weakened warlord. At her spirit's command, the dragonborn lashes out and finishes off the wounded tentacle. Another shriek echoes throughout the chamber, and the tentacle descends into the darkness, leaving behind another portal in the ground. The spirits move about, repositioning themselves in the midst of the fray.

The last tentacle, however, is not to be underestimated, and lets loose another psionic blast in the midst of the gathered adventurers, searing their minds and sending the warlord in particular reeling.

Bernkastel spends a healing surge and regains 12 hit points, Michael regains 4 hit points, and Bernkastel, Michael, and Sureiya gain 4 temporary hit points.

Given the tentacle's tenacity, Sariel doubts she has much chance to land mental assault on it.

The next best thing is to confound and confuse it.

The eladrin attempts to imprison her foe in an illusionary maze, but the tentacle quickly shakes off the effects--though it is still rather sluggish in the aftermath.
