Everything has been put together here and organized for maximum ease of use:


Step 0: Download the above, unrar it.
Step 1: Run the program in the Step 1 folder, this will download the character builder.
Step 2: Run the program in the Step 2 folder, this will update your Cbuilder. Make sure to specify the directory to which you installed the program in Step 1. Be absolutely sure of this, because it may try to install in a different directory (Program Files as opposed to Program Files x86 or vice versa), which will not work.
Step 3: Move the files in the Step 3 folder into the CBuilder directory.
Step 4: Run the "CharacterBuilderLoader.exe" file. It will take some time to download all the custom content the first (and perhaps second) time you load it.
Step 5: That should be it. Remember, always open it using the CharacterBuilderLoader.exe and not the default Cbuilder file.

If you don't have access to Starblade Flurry, I'd probably go the staff route instead of a dagger. You can get an accurate staff just as easily as an accurate dagger, and Staff of Ruin is an excellent weapon. Plus you have access to Staff Training and Hafted Defense, and the awesome Staff Expertise.

Starblade Flurry is pretty much the only reason a dagger is at all popular for a monk.

Flowform armor is generally the best cloth armor for any given situation. Kinda makes Steadfast Amulet redundant, though, so I'd say personal choice on neck item.

Depending on your starting level, though, you might not have a wide selection and may need to make do with what you have available.

Even nerfed as it is, I think Melee Training is essential for a monk that doesn't favor Strength. Aside from that, it seems solid enough.

If a character's bonuses are left unchecked in favor of DCs and opposing checks based only on levels, it could eventually become impossible to hide anything from the character's passive insight and perception.

Good reasons aren't too difficult to come up with, right? For example, I want to guess at a person's motives with an insight check, but that person could secretly be a level 30 dragon with high level-based bonuses to every skill. Naturally, I would have no chance, but if my skill bonuses ever became on par with a level 30 dragon's, we'd simply end up encountering more of such.

Oh, I see what you mean now. Not going to hit much at level 6 with only +7 to attack. +12 sounds better but not sure what I should give up. Deadly draw is good, but so is everything else. That's the only thing I could really give up. My only problem defense is fort, and slightly will.

With a decent Wisdom score, your Will defense should be fine at this level without any feat boosts. I took Superior Will on my Invoker primarily because of the level 1 daily that causes her to daze herself.

Any character is going to have 1-2 defenses that are weak, that just can't be helped, really.

Update after I nap and have a chance to make the next part of the map.

I think it's okay to not pay a lot of feat-service to defenses in the heroic tier, as it's not until mid-paragon that they start to fall severely behind expected math.

Remember, though, melee training just boosts your basic attacks, so it's more of in case you need to charge or make an OA or something. Your implement attacks will still have a lower attack bonus, but since they hit NADs they'll still be accurate.

FYI, Sureiya's perception of the enemies in the room is based on his PASSIVE perception, as he was only able to see into the hallway when he first made a Perception check (and was too far from the enemies to realistically hear them at the time).

If you can get line of sight to any of them you could use Color Orb for massive damage, but for now maybe grasping shadows will work to keep some of them out of the fight for a while.

You guys fought the ghasts before, so I'll remind you a bit of their capabilities.

Their basic attack is pretty basic, deals some damage and immobilizes (save ends). Against immobilized enemies, they can either use an at-will power which deals damage similar to their basic attack but hits twice, or an encounter power that deals hefty damage and recharges when it misses.

They have an aura that slows you until the end of their next turn if you begin your turn in the aura. They also explode when they die, dealing some necrotic damage and ongoing necrotic damage in a close burst 2.

It strikes me that Lina is more of a Hexblade than a Swordmage/Wizard. Consider: in the Slayers universe, some spells draw from the Demon Lords. In particular, Dragon Slave draws from Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu.

Channeling Shield reduces damage by 7 and I get a +2 to my next damage roll before end of next turn.
Dimensional Vortex whisks a melee away from allies, and the enemy gets a +2 to damage roll against its ally (best used against a Minion to attack the Acolyte, but I can see it used to deny the Acolyte its damage on us)
My armour has an Immediate Interrupt, +8 VS Fortitude that strikes with Lightning and Dazes... but only if I'm targeted for an attack.

Incidentally, I was thinking about your offer, and I believe that the cavalier's ability to control the space around him to some extent is far too valuable to give up, despite all the perks paladins get. It's simply because we don't have very many ways to control positioning of ourselves or enemies or discourage their movement. And punishing on a shift isn't something the paladin can normally do. Really, the biggest issues I can think of with the cavalier right now are that it's more reactive than proactive as a defender (cleans up the mess by taking a hit or healing the ally that got hit, other than Strike of Hope) and Righteous Radiance being fairly weak and near impossible to enhance. If I could find a way to address both I'd probably be content.

We havent really had much luck or a choice at this point though. Minions that revive and mark you every turn, a dragon which makes your attacks do half damage, etc etc, combined with bad dice rolls and low surges.

I reduced its power several times. I cut the damage of reanimating shadows nearly in half, reduced its area of effect and range, and removed the free bite it got if it missed with claw twice. I considered making its aura auto-damage creatures that ended within, but decided against it. Reanimating shadows also used to grant the minions 10 temporary hit points and let them stand as a free action. The minions also used to have defender aura rather than a mark, which would have let them keep you under their punishment at least twice now where you were able to ignore it.

You are fighting a watered-down version of my original concept. Bad rolls (luck) combined with underestimating the power of a solo are screwing you over here.

What are you talking about, we used three attacks attempting to daze the dragon. If we haven't spammed action points/dailies its because our resources are quite limited and we were trying to start a nova turn, unfortunatelly we had no luck with that.

Well, it did miss Torinn with claw. Its breath attack is +12 vs. Fortitude, though... most of you don't have high Fortitude. (At least one of you it can hit on a natural 2, with no other penalties in effect).

So, if I make it to my next turn, my turn will entail granting two allies a 2 square shift (and bonus defenses on top) with noble presence (sacrificing my movement), an inspiring word on someone (most likely torinn or someone else), and using a second wind on myself (for bonus defenses and some healing needed). Granted, I won't be doing much this turn besides healing, but it will be granting people health and bonus defenses to make us last enough until a nice nova round or something.

I should note that the only reason the dragon is at -53 HP right now is because you attacked it. If you hadn't attacked it, it'd be at full health now. I think that says something for the effectiveness of radiant damage. And if you count up the amount of damage your chilling smite prevented, it's probably a very nice number. On the breath attack alone it prevented 25.

Also, what makes you think the dragon has damage resistance? It resists necrotic, but that doesn't seem relevant. The only reason anyone's attacks against it were reduced was because you were weakened when it happened.

Forced movement negatively affects more than just the cavalier. The fighter is nearly as badly affected, as he cannot enforce his marks from range, and the brawler for example has his grabs broken by forced movement. My houserule was to at least let defender aura function as well as a mark in regards to forced movement, though it's true that paladins and swordmages can still enforce their mark at a distance (to some extent, so can battleminds and wardens, though the distance is short), but at the very least the cavalier still has access to sanction in some fashion. Anyone who missed with their two encounter powers would be in a similar situation, though most encounter powers don't damage on a miss, so you have that at least. Yes, if you had made it this far with both dailies (and therefore didn't use one earlier), you could use another, but I don't think it's a huge deal.

And yes, a lot of classes are affected by a weakened condition equally. It's not just your burden to keep the dragon under control, the other party members are supposed to help you with that.

Using inspired belligerence right now is bad. Most of us are weakened, and I'd like to set up a nice round of intuitive, warlord, and inspired belligerence after we heal up a bit, because if we use it now, most likely if the dragon recharges, and it is going to waste on weakened damage dealers. Interesting, interesting. Apparently Wizards customer service rules that a multiclass cleric who gets the Healer's Lore feature can swap that for Battle Cleric's Lore, which is essentially free proficiency in scale armor and a +2 shield bonus without a shield. That sure makes up for that feature being near useless otherwise and then some.

I couldn't find any RAW contradictions to this either. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, the high crit from a falchion does not apply. Weapon properties only work when a weapon is being used as a weapon, not when it's used as an implement. Same goes for things like brutal, versatile, etc.

I notice that Intelligence is one of their primary attributes, but they don't actually have any Intelligence-based skills on their skill list. I would consider changing that.

Based on a quick power overview: blind is much too strong a condition to place on an at-will attack power, so perhaps rewording into something like "you and your allies gain concealment against the target." I'm hesitant about adding a power that is pretty much straight-up better than Winged Horde when Winged Horde is already so good. Perhaps consider changing it to "opportunity attacks" rather than "opportunity actions." There are some minor wording issues here and there, but nothing serious. 10 damage on a zone is awfully high for a level 1 power. Consider making some of the level 1 powers ranged attacks that deal some damage to creatures adjacent to the target when they hit. Scatter, Now might be a good one for that.

... you realise Wrathful Hammers WANT to get hit because that means they get their Con mod as bonus damage against that enemy? Defiant Words get Wis mod as bonus damage if they are MISSED, so they're more looking to avoiding damage. And, as I said, I know about the Shield bonus feat Fighters have.

Look. The only Runepriest that doesn't like getting hit is Defiant Word. And Defiant Word is Str/Wis. No problems qualifying, there.

Wrathful Hammer LIKES getting hit because that gives it its bonus, and it's an amazing Striker. Its Paragon Path grants itself an additional attack on an ally's turn.

Level 11 Runepriest, Defiant Word type. This type does Control alongside Leadership.

- Can make an MBA against targets hit by allies once per round at the cost of Rune state for Striker-ish.
- Grants +4 (+2 before level 11) damage in a close burst 10 (5 before level 11) every time it heals.
- Can At-Will Immobilise and grant a +5 bonus to damage against a single target! Can also give a +5 bonus to AC to adjacent ally instead.

Which is to say, taking Dispel Magic (Emerald Eye is single target where all my anti-Will attacks are Bursts), retrained Flaming Sphere to Phantom Chasm (proning, + zone that prones enemies that enter it which is sugoi useful for defences), and the feat is Unarmoured Agility because need more AC as Defender.

I can take Horrid Whispers instead of Phantom Chasm if someone has World Serpent's Grasp, since Horrid Whispers is guaranteed slow + -2 to attack rolls, which is more controller-ish than just Proning.

Sheet with what's done so far. Still have to finally decide on a name, fill in the remaining background stuff and fluff and all that good stuff.

The item choices and whatnot are only if rin allows my level 6 item to be changed to money so I can buy what I need. (Since Flowform Armor, my two daggers add up to about 2200 gold, level 6 item is 1800, you get 1k gold for level 5 expected item level or w/e, so I end up with 600 gold left.) I could maybe sacrifice my Ki focus for a neck slot or something too. The Ki focus is mostly for the feat and choice sometimes to use it when I use a power/attack, and the defense bonus daily it gives.

Are you sure you wanna do magic items like that? You can apply the enhancement bonus of a ki focus on any attack with a mundane weapon. With that in mind, it doesn't seem optimal to me to get both a magic ki focus AND two magic weapons.

A mundane dagger with a +3 ki focus is treated as a +3 dagger when you attack through the ki focus. Furthermore, if you attack through a ki focus, you can't use the weapon's properties when you attack.

Ki foci are somewhat unique in that you can wear your ki focus, and then attack with a weapon, and you can treat the weapon as if it carried the same magical properties as your ki focus. If you have both a magic weapon and a magic ki focus, you can only apply one of the bonuses to a given attack.

In other words, you don't really need both a magic weapon and a magic ki focus. In fact, you can carry around a magic ki focus and a bunch of different kinds of weapons and use them all with the magic ki focus, applying the ki focus's effects through the weapon (this is how an executioner assassin works, btw). And since they can't both apply to the same attack, it's rather inefficient to get magic weapons and a magic ki focus unless you have a specific reason for it.

There seems to be an issue with mundane thrown weapons not returning when used through a ki focus. Enchanting the thrown weapon with Magic Weapon +1 probably solves the issue, but if you put something like Distance Weapon on the thrown weapon, the properties don't work when used through a ki focus, etc.

Also, Farbond Spellblade's thrown weapon property doesn't work when used through a ki focus. All RAW of course so there's room for houseruling and etc.

This is only partially right. The mundane properties of the weapon (like high crit, brutal, etc.) will apply if it is a weapon attack, like a basic attack or an attack granted from another class. They don't generally apply for monks since monk attacks are implement attacks, unless the monk is using a basic attack.

On the other hand, any magical properties of a magical weapon will not apply if you use it through a ki focus.

I don't see a reason for house-ruling in the case of thrown weapons. Just carry around about 5-10 daggers, they're dirt cheap. Provided you don't go tossing them into pits or acid, you can always pick them up after a battle is over. And use an accurate ki focus instead of an accurate dagger.

True, but a monk probably isn't throwing very many daggers in the first place. The Quick Draw feat is always an option if you do go that route.

If you're particularly attached to the rhythm blade parrying dagger, you can keep that. You won't be attacking with it anyway. But I wouldn't worry about the subtle dagger, instead, pick up a +2 ki focus of some sort, and change your accurate dagger feat to accurate ki focus, and just carry some mundane daggers. Make sure you have your neck slot item covered too, it's rather important to have one by this point.

Come to think of it, Mage's [heavy blade/light blade] is pretty nice for anybody proficient with a dagger who wants a bigger, meaner weapon and can't find any good weapon enchantments. Or for somebody who just doesn't want to spend a feat on a proficiency for a weapon.

I figured this would work better, since for example Imeplement Focus (Ki Focus) and the powers that improve the reach of your melee touch attacks work with this. I wasn't really intending to open up charge optimization or something for monks, just offering the ability to make a decent MBA.

Next on the list is:
1. Look at Intelligent Blademaster as a free bonus feat
2. Consider what I want to do about backgrounds that let you base your HP on an ability other than Constitution (I hate them and how they're so much better than anything else for 90% of builds)
3. Write up new rules for Knowledge checks that will swap the difficulty level for powers and resist/vulnerabilities, and require different checks for monsters that have a certain origin but draw their powers from a different source (a divine caster with the Natural origin will require a Religion check to get hints as their full range of powers, for example).

Minimum value != starting value, under RAW this means that if you fought 100 battles in the adventure your minimum value is 100, just need to fight one encounter.

Oh, right. Now I remember why I liked staffs on monks so much. Three words: Staff of Ruin. It adds damage to all of your attacks, not just melee (unlike Iron Armbands of Power), and it's much better than any Ki Focus enchant, and it saves you money.

Even if Staff of Ruin doesn't strike your fancy, there are a lot more staff enchants than ki focus enchants. You can also get pretty good defenses with a staff if you take Staff Fighting and Hafted Defense.

I made a blaster mage that used the item from the Gifts for the Queen set for some bonuses to hit and damage instead. I was counting on using an Ioun Stone of Intellect instead.

I wouldn't say the minor action attack is the only thing good about the Souhei. Those skill bonuses are in very useful skills, and a random bonus to saving throws against very bad conditions is always appreciated. The attack powers are terrible though, and the utility powers are okay (Sohei Clarity is almost as good as the level 10 Fighter Utility "Clearheaded," which is a Utility power that I think is a good choice).

Eh, I just never really liked the Staff thing and if I'm going for Starblade Flurry later anyway, I figure why not. Staff expertise isn't really that great for monks, staff fighting I don't think I'd even really use/get much (plus I already get the same sort of benefit defensively out of those two for just about the same amount of feats used up right now)

I got them sometime after that post and before my most recent ones. For now, no honor system, but the souhei is fine.

I think the reach property is only for weapon attacks, which the monk doesn't have naturally.

That's fine. The primary benefit you'd get out of Staff fighting is making a defensive weapon, thus giving you a free +1 AC.

But yes, Staff of Ruin is the main draw for me. I just forgot to mention it before and thought I should. If you don't wanna use a staff though, that's fine.

The obscure religions may not be devoted to a god in particular, but rather ancestral spirits of nature. Those don't really have names.

If you're looking for nature gods, Silvanus is the greater god with the Nature domain, and the god Meilikki is associated with forests, and there are also other gods associated with various aspects of nature like Winter and Caves.

In terms of backstory, I almost always go with the primal Nature cult; even in real life! More seriously though, Nature is *old* - older than some gods. Directing your rituals to the spirits within a certain area or primaeval things that cannot be easily understood by others seems more suited then taking a more cleric/paladin-y monoworshipped god. My two cents.

Half-right!... I'm sorry for up and leaving, although I guess not having had a computer for some time is some excuse? I lose time, then feel terrible for having lost it, and then can't muster the energy to go back and check on something that's stagnated. I regret that terribly, but because of my situation do little to change it. Hopefully you won't dislike me too terribly because of that?

New house rules. Sorry Astaroth, I'm not convinced you need Mounted Combat as a bonus feat. In any case, there is a theme for that now if you prefer that to your current choice.

If you compare it to other ability scores, the benefits of boosting Constitution are pretty few. Classes with Con-based attacks are rare, a lot of classes that use Con double with Str (which leaves two NADs low), and there is only one Con-based skill that doesn't get used a whole lot most of the time.

Taking away one of the few benefits of boosting Con with something like a background seems wrong to me.

They're sacrificing a better background slot for it, so I don't really see the issue, especially for those who have to invest stats somewhere else and either don't have room for con or much option for it. It's not like it's that huge of a boost

That's not a good argument, since most other background benefits are marginal compared to the benefit you receive from Auspicious Birth/Born Under a Bad Sign. There is very little as universally applicable as more HP.

If we compare background benefits to feats, then almost every other background benefit is about on the same level or weaker than a feat. While using your primary ability score for HP is pretty much always stronger than Toughness, and in most cases remains that way until Epic tier (where it becomes about equal).

Fun fact : There's an epic tier ring that lets you use charisma instead of constitution for determining healing surge amounts. With those backgrounds, constitution is completely unneeded for charisma characters unless it somehow comes up in skill checks or for feat prerequisites.

Artificer MC: Can use one infusion per day, infusion does not recharge

Durable: +2 healing surges

Familiar: Either Arcane Wisp (sheds light in 2-10 squares, +2 Arcana/Nature, Active can null concealment penalties in 2 square range) or Coute Attendant (+2 to arcana, stow/retrieve item as free action, Active can grant combat advantage to me if turn starts within 2 squares of it)

Eladrin Soldier: Proficiency with all spears, +2 tiered damage to all attacks

I kinda like Eladrin Soldier most as extra damage can never hurt, but the Familiar is also fun for the RP value.

I'll probably end up picking Eladrin Soldier due to lazylord etc. If I go Familiar I'm more likely to grab Arcane Wisp due to Nature bonus and light meaning I don't necessarily need to cast the Light spell anymore, and getting dim or bright light in 10 squares is kinda neat for RP.
