Everything has been put together here and organized for maximum ease of use:


Step 0: Download the above, unrar it.
Step 1: Run the program in the Step 1 folder, this will download the character builder.
Step 2: Run the program in the Step 2 folder, this will update your Cbuilder. Make sure to specify the directory to which you installed the program in Step 1. Be absolutely sure of this, because it may try to install in a different directory (Program Files as opposed to Program Files x86 or vice versa), which will not work.
Step 3: Move the files in the Step 3 folder into the CBuilder directory.
Step 4: Run the "CharacterBuilderLoader.exe" file. It will take some time to download all the custom content the first (and perhaps second) time you load it.
Step 5: That should be it. Remember, always open it using the CharacterBuilderLoader.exe and not the default Cbuilder file.

At first I was going to haggle for some additional effect on the new cavalier feat (something rated black or lower so's I feel like I'm coming out on top). Then I actually saw the feat.

I can't haggle in good conscience anymore. That is quite a bit of healing, like some kind of proactive shielding aegis that automatically revives downed allies.

Actually, do your radiance thing also mark the enemies?
If so, I could reach a max of "22 AC + 5 all defenses" because of attack penalties with harmony blade, predator's hide and a mark on the enemy. It gets even better with Blade Dancer stuff.

Ugh. Looking at DnDNext, here are my initial thoughts:

1. They took what worked in 4E and made it worse. (We still have healing surges, but we have a lot less of them and we have to roll for them).
2. They took several flawed aspects of third edition (>implying there were any that were not flawed) and brought them back. Monsters are boring again, so are martial characters, and spell casters are playing a whole different game (recipe for disaster).
3. Some of the stuff they removed worked. Why are we back to relying more on saving throws? If anything, I would've liked to go even further in the other direction and make you have LESS rolls when it's not your turn. I liked it when the attacker was doing pretty much all the rolling, not the defender. Now we're back to what it was in 3rd edition: arbitrary for no good reason.

Suffice it to say I have no interest in running in or playing in any DnDNext games at the moment.

Well, there are no optional rules included in the package that I see.

It looks to me like they're just trying to lure third edition fans back with this, but I don't know why ANYONE would want monsters and martial classes to be that boring again.

DMing in 4E is fun for me because I can make fun and interesting mechanics for combat encounters. A lot of that comes through the monsters and through creative use of the rules. In this edition, none of that would come from monsters because almost every single monster they've included in this package is boring. I'd have to wing it with terrain and "outside the rules" stuff a lot more to even make encounters a little interesting (you know, like in 3rd edition).

in all fairness, at least Neverwinter Nights games are fun. Though that required a lot of tweaking so that it would pause each time a character's turn came up.

Sneak attack/crit immunity can also go eat a bag of dicks. As with any other mechanic that makes a character class ineffective like that. You may as well just tell the player they need to roll a new character if you're gonna neuter them.

tl;dr at least the vidya games had redeeming qualities

The worst part is that it's rather ambiguous. The part about being "disrupted" is only mentioned on the character sheet, and it's unclear. "If you take damage, you become disrupted on your next turn." Is that any time you take damage? What about if you get damaged during your own turn? Why is this only mentioned on the character sheet and not anywhere in the "How to Play" rules? I searched the entire document for "disrupt" but found nothing. I get that this is a play-test, but this is sloppy.

Also, the mechanic itself strikes me as anti-fun.

The fluff isn't very sensible either. "After you cast a spell it vanishes from your mind until you can prepare spells again".

So... wizards are hackjobs who can't even remember their spells? What?

In any case the opposing rolls are annoying. As a wizard you have to auto-roll your CON save to avoid getting disrupted, and being disrupted means you can only use Cantrips. Why would you DO this? I get nerfing wizards so they're not I AM GOD, but making it so that a DM with a minion who does 1 HP damage could potentially kill a wizard by itself without fear of reprisal is...

Well, the part about a spell vanishing from your mind until you can prepare spells again is a holdover from the magic system of third edition and before. I never particularly liked it, but it was meant to be a limiting factor that you could only cast X spells per day, and you had to prepare every single one of them.

Still, the number of spells per day a wizard can cast at low levels seems cripplingly low. Furthermore, they don't seem powerful enough to me to justify placing such high limitations on them. Clerics aren't subject to disruption apparently, and are tougher and get better armor. Are wizard spells so much more powerful than cleric spells that they deserve the disruption mechanic? I don't think so at a glance.

It breaks the grab if you push it out of reach of the grabbing attack, so if you push the drown such that its 2 squares or further away from its target, it would break the grab.

I don't think so. It's only supposed to work if an enemy you damaged with righteous radiance attacks. The drown you damaged with righteous radiance didn't attack anyone.

I was gonna ask Rin some questions, but Rin was away forever, then was offline. I'll just post my question here and then continue my turn tomorrow.

Use Spinning Leopard Maneuver, shift 6 squares (1 north, 1 west, 3 south, (taking the argent rain 5 damage only once on my entire turn),1 southwest. I assume the only targets I am able to attack are Drown 3 on the first shift, cult zealot on the second, Drown 2 on the final and not Drown 3 on the first shift, drown 3 (again) and zealot on the second, zealot again (if it's alive), then drown on the final shift.
(Probably going to slide away the last drown I attack away from Sariel with flurry of blows.)

If my turn was before myn's, I would have done this to a lot more targets, but ehh.

You can only attack a given target once with spinning leopard maneuver. Otherwise you could just shift a circle around a target and attack it 6 times.

Eh, not really. Warlocks aren't particularly great at it either without a very careful selection of powers. Rangers get attacks that hit the same target more than once, minor action attacks, and out-of-turn attacks. Warlocks have a few out-of-turn attacks and dailies that grant minor action damage, and there's maybe one monk power that gives an immediate interrupt attack to being attacked, but that's about it. It's not just about DPR, but about how much you can unload on a moment's notice. And unless you're investing in the charger package, those are pretty much the only ways to get respectable novas.

In this case, George using Argent Rain against minions is actually a good call, since the auto-damage basically ensures a kill. Using an action point to Spiteful Glamor a minion, on the other hand...~

flurry of blows damage should be 4 total btw. Also, sorry for dem rolls, Riri. You just have the worst luck from the dice gods. I got a chuckle about George fending for himself though and couldn't agree more. Moving away from the party just makes us less able to help him if there were more lurkers or something nearby.

I also got a good laugh out of the description of my attack for that turn, punting the minion into the water, breaking teeth, etc.

Generally moving towards the enemies rather than away is a bad strategy for a ranged attacker. I also have to move three squares per turn for Hidden Sniper, and I'd prefer not to take opportunity attacks for that.

Astaroth, my Resourceful Presence grants a +8 bonus to damage, not a +7. Half level, 7 / 2 = 3.5. +int mod, Int is 5, 8.5 != 7.

Well, under ideal conditions you'd let me use my Adaptive Stratagem Utility first. It's once per encounter +5 bonus to damage and +3 bonus to saving throws... and Adaptive counts for everything.

So. +15 for standard+minor attack, then +13 for your AP attack, and if that attacks twice it's +26, for a total of +41 damage off of buffs assuming all attacks hit and you use a double-attack with AP. You can get another +5 if you downgrade Move to Minor for Sohei Flair + Off-hand Strike combi, resulting in +46 damage off of my buffs alone, ne.

I haven't got the feat that buffs my Resourceful Presence to +10 damage bonus yet. (it adds a flat +2 to both bonuses) Things'd be crazy damage-wise.

Also, Destructive Surprise lets me give someone a Free Action to shift 2 and do 3[W] + Str/Dex damage, although I might retrain it to Lead By Example; LBE lets two people use a melee basic attack, ne, which could be stronger in some situations?

I like my build since I can grant stuff a lot. For encounters, I have, and these are all on hitting AND damaging an enemy:

+3 to attack rolls until end of next turn
automatically succeed on any one saving throw
roll twice for any one attack until end of next turn, use either result

The first two slow, the last one knocks prone as additional effect if I hit enemies, but they apply their effects without me effecting a hit. (although you guys need to)

I also can grant attacks in a pinch, ne.

Which is why it's probably the most frequently stolen power through dilettante behind Twin Strike. A slide on an attack that can be used on an MBA is really, really strong in the right hands.

Anyway, since warlocks are secondary controllers, I just think it's somewhat disappointing that eldritch blast is just a magic version of a superior crossbow basic attack against reflex, something that a superior crossbow can do later on anyway. It didn't do anything special in 3.5 either, but on the other hand, you could add stuff on to it like status effects and multi-targeting and such. It's just so plain in 4E that there's nothing particularly "eldritch" about it unless you go out of your way to invest in what little support it has. Even Magic Missile can slide if you use a specific wand with it, but off the top of my head, all the support Eldritch Blast gets is some keyword changes and maybe more damage. Combining that with Prime Shot, but without the nice damage bonuses rangers can tack onto it, and use hunter's quarry's restrictions on a strictly ranged class, only able to curse the nearest enemy instead of, say, the one in the back that they can hit due to being ranged, it feels sloppy.

Though warlocks are at least better than the sum of their parts.

I'd like to use Fearsome Command, since if Astaroth hits one of its targets he automatically saves against daze at the end of his turn. Want to follow up with a Heal on Torinn which depletes my curing resources, but nothing to do.

A few things: as anon surmised, this is not a set DC to beat, the drown makes a stealth check when it hides, and as a lurker with Stealth trained and high Dex (20), it has a pretty high modifier. So yes, it rolled very very well. The others haven't rolled this high and would've been easier to spot, but this one in particular did get rather lucky.

The problem with including a "critical" to skill checks or the like is that there is actually a special rule when you roll a natural 20 on an attack roll but the resultant value isn't high enough to hit the monster--the attack hits but does not critical. There's not really a way to apply this to most skill checks, as in this case, you either know where the monster is or you don't. I mean, I could give you a general clue of where it is--somewhere several squares below surface level west of where Folka was before he moved--but it doesn't do a lot to prepare for its action.

On the other hand, it's of course possible to ready actions for when the drown surfaces and the like to try and catch it off-guard if you wish. And as a lurker its "combo" takes at least one turn of set-up and one turn of execution to pull off, so I don't see it being a huge threat this encounter given how you've blown through most of the baddies already.

Also, I ironically and accidentally made the Tsunami attack less dangerous when I widened the piers from 3 tiles to 4 tiles wide, since it can't actually plunge you into the water anymore. You can still be pulled in by the drown's drag to depths power, but only if it can use a standard action while it's grabbing you.

I did it for aesthetic reasons and then forgot that the 3-tile wide piers had a purpose~ Oh well, starting off with an easy encounter can be okay.

By the way, I was curious, as I don't know much about bards, but my impression was that cunning were more spellcastery, the other two I don't know too much about. (Or rather, the general impression I got is one is more involved in melee, another in ranged) Anyways, I was curious as how to build item wise a level 2 bard (for implemenets and whatnots), I think I have the general idea for spells, feats, and stats down for cunning bards, the others I just wasn't really sure about. (Oh, and the bard is a gnome, so chainmail isn't really an option imo, and the best sword that he could wield as an implement is a shortsword or something I think, as otherwise it'd be considered two handed.) The ability scores (obviously subject to change), are 8 str, 13 con, 11 dex, 16 int (+2 from racial), 10 wis, 16 cha (+2 again), the +2's not included already into the final stats obviously.

I guess along with tips to playing one. I gave him a light shield too, and have him wearing hide armor.

Cunning are the ones most likely to use implements, yes. Valorous use swords (mostly) and Prescient use bows (mostly). Also, chainmail is usually bad, unless you're getting Tactician's armor, but that shouldn't come up until later (and you want ringmail for that, not chainmail).

High INT is good, as bard riders tend to be powerful. As for implement, as a gnome I might suggest a wand, but another option is to take a dagger. Since a dagger doubles as a ranged weapon, it opens up some rather potent ranged weapon only powers that might not otherwise be options.

It really depends on whether you'd rather go with the easier-to-use wand with more limited power selection, or spend a feat for the dagger but gain access to a wider selection of potent powers. As for armor, I wouldn't go with chainmail as it places speed and skill penalties on you for inferior AC to hide or leather. I don't know what kind of items to suggest other than magical items, though. Mind the rituals, as bards get some special ones.

At the suggestion of some, I won't be tracking/awarding EXP all the time now. It'll be more of a "you level up at the end of the dungeon" thing. This might let me get a more natural number of encounters per dungeon (including non-combat ones). Though I will obviously still be using EXP to budget encounters appropriately (for five people rather than six, that may be one of the reasons the encounter appeared easier).

Dungeons and Dragons is not necessarily the same thing as a video game RPG. Wandering off the beaten path often just ends up in areas the DM hasn't even mapped out~

Not to say you can't, but I haven't often planned to put treasure in areas that you could easily miss. That seems unfair to me.

Next time, I advise not getting hit by an easily avoidable attack~ This is seriously "walking into fiery zone" level stuff here~

The monsters aren't going to be blocks of tofu that just stand there and let you hit them. You need to adjust your tactics to the situation, and charging in before you know the situation is, well, not advised~

Sariel has no useful dailies here, so she's not using any.

Priority targets imo:

1) Minions if you can reach them. (Myn can reach them)
2) Lunatics
3) Stygian Guards
4) Speaker

The inverse is true for debilitating them. Taking out the stuff with lower HP reduces the damage we're receiving faster rather than go for the strongest first and then suffer the fabled Extra Damage Before Death round.

Killing the stuff with lower HP reduces overall damage dealt to us because they can no longer deal damage.

We kill three archers, that's -18 potential damage sources where the Speaker does ~9 damage with its Ranged attack, the Brutes have done ~17 damage.

Why exactly do we want to suffer these archers to live and suffer a round where they get their damage boosted? Don't focus down the thing with the highest HP first if you can help it, just lock it down so it can't do much.

They do, at the end of their turns, but they get a damage boost on that turn. In addition, the speaker will recharge and use his teleport power again when he becomes bloodied.

Well, you need to at least contribute to strategizing and more than one or two lines. Talking is a free action, after all~

Certain people are becoming frustrated at the lack of strategic discussion and the fact that people don't take in information that's right in front of them~ But in-character, if you have a good idea of what the monsters do and your allies don't, you should either be shouting out orders or at least trying to give your allies an idea of what they're up against~

Yeah, his actual AC is pretty low and though those things helped, the guard's attack total was 23 (after taking into account -2 from concealment) so it was enough to hit his effective AC of 22~ The second attack is vs. Fortitude so lol~

The lunatics may be rampaging brutes, but the speaker can psychically influence their behavior. I imagine it directed the lunatic to forget attacking the monk (after failing multiple times) and come hit a softer, wounded target~

Torinn and Folka also need a few surges, even if Folka seems immortal so far. And the rest should be evenly divided between Sariel and Myn.

Aside from ritual, our actual hp are kinda low.
If Rin allows it, let's spend another two short rest, so Sariel can use inspiring word to heal us.
The surge share stays the same, but our hp don't.

Sariel's going to need to post something in regards to either short rests or casting Comrade's Succor before I allow that. I'll wait a little bit longer. But one way or another I'm making a DM update today.

For the record, I did intend to allow this so that hopefully you guys would have less trouble with running out of surges. I know I often push you guys pretty hard in regards to the adventuring day and you're running low on surges by the end.

This may be a bit troublesome, but it's really meant to make things better for all of us~

Actually it heals 12, because 2d6 average = 7, +5 from Tactical Inspiration is 12.
