The trek through Gray Forest is very slow going. The woods are thick with trees and flora, much to the adventurers' frustration. Worse still is how little daylight breaks through the canopy, making navigation even harder. It would have been outright impossible had nobody brought the flameless everburning torches to guide their way. At least for the few days spent traveling, the journey has been otherwise uneventful. You haven't noticed any signs of pursuit yet.

At some point during the third day of travel, the group emerges into a clearing, the afternoon sunlight fully bearing down on them for the first time in a long time.


You are currently outside of initiative. Rest, take any number of actions you can (within reason), make whatever checks necessary (within reason), look around (within reason, as in don't go too far ahead/back), and equip yourselves if you think you will need to have your equipment out (you are currently not equipped, so this might be important). The game will progress tonight at the latest, so make your preparations before then.

Finally he looks at his allies. Allies, because they fight for the same cause. Not that he actually likes hanging out with these people. What was up with that goat head, anyway?!

And that useless whatcha-ma-call it from la résistance turned tail faster than he'd ever seen a Longtooth pup run.

Of course, he'd also run. Che, like some kind of coward.

For a minute, she thinks it'd be nice if she could make facial expressions, so she forms a smiling face out of the shards on her chest. ... Okay, that might be a litle creepy, she thinks to herself, and banishes the horrid monstrosity back into the shape of bazongas. She paces around in a circle around the group, searching for any targets of telepathy or sounds of rustling in the bushes. He watches the Shardmind's movements with crossed arms, pondering whether to try and aggravate the thing (Shardminds were capable of emotions? He'd never heard of it) or assist it in its efforts.


"Besides, there's something here, too," he finally decides to say, gesturing at the tracks of whatever creature passed through here. How anyone could miss tracks so large was beyond him, but then, he'd had to spend conscious effort to look, too, so who knows. "Die at the hands of known foes, taking some with us and at least accomplishing some kinda victory s'better than getting raunched to death by whatever stupid beast lives here."

Covered in her hood and mask obscuring most of her face except her eyes, ears, nose, and a tad bit of her hair, Lia can only sigh silently to herself at some of the "allies" she had been working with. For the most part she had not really been given a choice, given what they've gotten themselves into.

The Dwarf seemed honorable and trustworthy enough, religious as she may be.

The Barbarian seemed unruly, oft as most are, though the Longtooth was one of the few she's met of them in her life. He seemed to be in too much of a rush to die.

The Shardmind was still strange and unusual to her, this being the first that she has met. It also seemed way too amused with Alchemy and fire. Oh well. As long as she's not burning down forests and stuff without regard for it, it's fine, but the Telepathy is both helpful and annoying. The only voice she'd rather hear in her head is her own.

The Tiefling was something she also wasn't familiar with as well, and he seemed a bit high of himself, but maybe most Tieflings are that way. He seemed pretty helpful with his songs either way.

That left the Human. The enigma behind a Goat helmet. Hard to gather a good idea of motives, but helpful enough so far.

When she met some of them, she absentmindedly caught herself overobserving the Longtooth, trying to poke at the Shardmind's crystals and whatnot, curious to their purpose or their worth, as she used to be a trader, and the Tiefling, with his horns and tail, looking like some devil. She learned that not all of them are evil and that they are like this because of their ancestors, but that was mostly through stories...

Anyway, enough of that. Back to the present.

Lia can't help but glare at the Barbarian's comment about the woods (but not enough for him to notice!), and roll her eyes slightly at the Tiefling's comment. Sure, she had been used to woods like this but you'd think some of these allies had been far too pampered all their life.

She quickly makes herself of some use and equips her crossbow again and scans the area, checking to see if anyone else had missed anything thusfar.

Kadol Stormbrew snaps her eyes open, still clutching her holy symbol tightly, having just finished a rather intense prayer to Moradin. As she rises from her kneeling position, she takes her staff into her hands, tying her hanging anvil-like holy symbol to the head of the staff. She looks around, noting the smoke, and addresses the other humanoids that had gathered before her--hard to find one that you could trust in this lot, but getting out of her alive seemed like a more pressing concern than prejudice at the moment. "Tha stupid beast ye mention'd could be a trap, set by our enemies." Kadol comments drying, fixing her gaze on the open path ahead. "A'any rate, I'm not much up for tryin' tae trudge throo a buncha thick trees. So if ye'd like tae get moving in tae tha clearin' ahead, that'd be great fer me." With these words, she takes a brief moment to survey the area.

As the adventurers finish preparations for battle, a section of the forest bursts into flames, the ground charred black. From out of the inferno emerges what looks like a masked warforged wearing some kind of full-body suit. The flames don't even bother it as it mumbles behind its mask, pointing to the adventurers and holding up its axe in challenge. And just beyond the cover of the trees seems to be something else, wielding a wicked hooked polearm.

From behind them, a sinister voice barks orders,
"Excellent work. Send out a signal for the others promptly before engaging them, my eager friend."

Kadol can clearly see that the Hellforged came with a group. Poised a few paces behind it are a pair of humans, presumably part of the "city watch" from Lyrabar. The pair wield halberds with wickedly sharp hooks that burn as if they'd been soaked in oil and set ablaze. There seems to be another figure hiding just out of sight behind them.

"Heed, miscreants!" Kadol shouts, electric energy gathering around her eyes and around the head of her staff. "If ye'll not show yeselves, ahll just let Moradin light ye up!"

Kadol raises her staff upwards, and the energy shoots towards the sky with a crack of thunder. Moments later, a salvo of thunderbolts descend upon the two closest enemies, twisting and leaping from foe to foe.

I use lightning's revelation, origin E-13. Hit deals 18 lightning damage and imposes a -4 defense penalty until the end of my next turn.

Kadol's divine lightning engulfs the area, though the Hellforged managed to avoid it entirely. The soldier, on the other hand, takes the full brunt of the attack and looking much less sturdy but no less dangerous.


Kadol Stormbrew's Lightning's Revelation misses the Hellforged Razer and hits City Watch Soldier 2 for 18 lightning damage and it takes a -4 penalty to all defenses until the end of her next turn.

Arcana : The Hellforged Razer specializes in fire, and almost all its abilities deal more damage while the subject is burning. Vents of smoke erupt from its shoulders when it moves, granting it unparallelled freedom of mobility without fear of retribution.

Its momentum when it swings its battleaxe allows it to shift away effortlessly and disengage its attacker, and hurts burning enemies even more. On its arm is a device that quickly generates a large burst of flames that can engulf anyone careless enough to be caught in the blast, and it deals even more damage if the Razer has a flanking partner.

If it can't engage in close combat, the Razer will use a weak flare launcher to attack with and set its opponents ablaze, and it can also be fired high into the sky to act as a signal beacon. And finally, when it is attacked from range by a weapon projectile, it can potentially deflect the attack with a compressed air blast, sending it back at its source and with a fair chance of causing critical wounds if the errant bullet hits its source.

Lia fires her crossbow at the razer, who cannot react quickly enough to deflect the oncoming missile. The shot strikes it in the leg, hobbling its movements significantly. The hunter changes her stance and shifts closer to the enemy, analyzing the human soldiers.

Nature : City Watch Soldiers aren't known for playing fair, and they enjoy kicking enemies while they are down. Their flaming halberds can push targets away and knock them to their knees, or hurt them even more if they're already prone. Either way, it allows them to mark all creatures within their reach. They also have threatening reach, allowing them to make opportunity attacks against any enemies within two squares. If the enemy is marked when it tries to move within its reach, the soldier will trip them up and stop their escape cold, while those who would ignore its mark will quickly find themselves flat on their backs before the soldier slashes them with its deadly weapon. Finally, the soldier will viciously pummel an enemy that falls prone with its Spinebreaker attack, which hits hard and keeps an enemy from standing up.

The City Watch Soldier is a level 5 soldier, and its lightweight armor allows it to resist heat.

The source of the hissing voice from earlier finally moves into view, revealing a tiefling wielding a large crossbow with a sharp piece of metal on the end, and clad in light armor, who looks very displeased with the razer. "Shake it off, you piece of scrap metal!" he barks, prodding it harshly in the back with its bayonet. The hellforged twitches, but its companion's actions don't seem to have helped it any. The tiefling scowls and aims its crossbow at the dwarf, growling, "If you want something done," it begins, releasing a fiery bolt that hits the dwarf dead on, its enchantment making her feel particularly flammable, "You have to do it yourself! Now try and follow my example, you cretins!"

Walala, Lia : From the west, you hear the sound of heavy footsteps heading toward your location...

Lia's Clever Shot hits the Hellforged Razer for 20 damage, and it is slowed (save ends).
Lia changes her stance to Aspect of the Dancing Serpent and shifts to O-3 as a free action.
Tiefling Warlord moves to D-13 and uses Forceful Invigoration on the Hellforged Razer, who takes 5 damage and is able to roll a saving throw with a +2 bonus to the roll
Hellforged Razer fails its saving throw (lol 1)
Tiefling Warlord uses Fiery Bolt against Kadol Stormbrew, which hits for 22 fire damage and Kadol gains vulnerable 2 fire until the start of the tiefling warlord's next turn.

Rock charges down the soldier, who sweeps at the barbarian with its halberd in response. Though the hit burns with intense heat, it doesn't deter Rock, whose powerful charge connects and knocks the soldier to the ground. The soldier staggers back to its feet and tries to knock down the shifter with its polearm, but Rock easily dodges the blow, much to the soldier's frustration.

Nature : You can't tell much, but you can guess that it uses the abilities of both a tiefling and a warlord, and that its crossbow attack deals fire damage while making its opponents more susceptible to fire attacks. It can probably grant saving throws and healing, and likely has an action point feature. Being a tiefling, it will probably lash out at the first creature that hits it.

Yagi wastes no time in dropping the wounded soldier, who collapses to the ground in a heap after being hit by the knight's charge. But now the Hellforged Razer makes its move, lifting up its arm and spraying a burst of fire from its nozzle, engulfing everyone close by in flames that linger long after it stops. It raises its other arm towards the invoker and blasts a small ball of fire at her that sets her ablaze.

At the warlord's direction, the Razer charges Rock and its axe bites deep into the barbarian's skin, glowing and making his blood boil from the inside. But a timely intervention from Fays fends off the worse of the attack, and the Hellforged Razer propels itself back to where it was initially, holding its axe above its head and laughing triumphantly.

Trying to follow up on his companion's success, the remaining soldier moves up and makes a slashing motion at the injured shifter, but at the last second he deflects it off of his trusty gouge. Not one to be discouraged, the soldier follows up immediately with a feint, distracting both Yagi and Rock.

Now begins Round 2.

Rather enraged about being set aflame, Kadol growls loudly, "ENOUGH! If ye'll show this heresy 'fore a prophet of Moradin, I'll show ye some righteous wrath in turn!"

Gesturing through burning robes, Kadol raises her staff and grasps it with both hands, chanting a prayer while looking upwards. The sky above seems to darken briefly, as if all the light was being sucked out of it--until it becomes clear where it is being drawn to. A shimmering orb of light descends from between the clouds, about the size of a tall dwarf or short human, and slowly begins to fall towards the ground. As it draws closer, it gains speed, approaching terminal velocity just before smashing directly into the space where the fire-wielding construct stands. "BEGONE!" the invoker cries, as the sphere explodes with a brilliant flash, sending white ribbons of fire-like energy in every direction. Despite the radiant energy washing over all of the gathered humanoids, only those closest to the blast area feel the effects--the clustered foes of the invoker.

Kadol lowers her staff and nods in satisfaction, taking her staff into one hand and grasping her amulet in the other as she advances forward, closer to the fray. As she does so, the amulet shimmers, and she draws in a deep breath, feeling vitality return to her scorched body.

Lia's arrow finds its mark on the hapless Hellforged, who looks completely out of the fight despite being barely injured. The hunter shifts out of sight and blends in with her surroundings, listening for the approaching beast.

Perception : Whatever's approaching is really big, and it's almost on top of you already. From the sound of things, it's not even slowed down by the thick forest surrounding it.

"Accursed heathens!" barks the warlord, "You'll pay for this!" His threat would carry more weight if he wasn't currently blinded, but he murmurs in a low whisper to the Razer (or in its general direction) and the Hellforged repairs a small portion of its damage. The tiefling tries to skewer the longtooth shifter on the end of its bayonet, but Rock steps out of the way at the last second.

The sound of falling trees grows closer until a massive figure streaks by Lia without pause and attempts to flatten Walala. The artificer manages to avoid the worst of it, but looks a little unsteady on her feet. Beating its chest, the giant apelike monstrosity hits her with a savage blow, following up by trying to grab her in its huge hand. Walala just barely avoids it and the retaliatory attack, but make no mistake, she's in very bad shape right now.

Religion : The Young Infernal Berserker focuses its fury on the closest enemy, which it will attack with its fists, channeling such ferocity that even nearby enemies take damage from the impact. Particularly vicious attacks will knock the enemy completely senseless. Sometimes it can even use them twice in succession, or as a free action if it spends an action point. It will usually charge its first opponent with End the Hunt in an effort to keep them from escaping its fury. Then it grabs its target and hurls it at its allies like a missile, knocking them all down and leaving them open to its next pummeling blows. Subduing it is hard, as it can act outside its own initiative and can shake off afflictions more easily than most. Flanking it in an attack will have it react by slamming the ground and creating a vicious shockwave that dismisses any conjurations in the burst against their will. When the Young Infernal Berserker is bloodied, its power increases dramatically at the cost of its ability to defend itself. Just being near its fiery wounds is painful, and it can act outside its initiative even more frequently. Finally, while bloodied, its attacks carry the blazes of the Nine Hells with them, singing its foes with every swing.

Kadol strides forward and unleashes righteous indignation against the cultists, but the light harmlessly sweeps past them. The hunter's follow up volley is more successful, bringing the Hellforged closer to falling and forcing the warlord to taste its own blood. The tiefling lashes out in fiery retaliation at Lia, singeing her with its attack, but she remains unphased, going back into hiding.

The Tiefling Warlord's faltering faith makes its words of encouragement ring hollow, the Hellforged showing no signs of getting back up. Desperately it lashes out at the nearest creature, but only invites swift retribution from Yagi's blade, missing his trusty steed and putting the commander down for good.

The infernal creature can be heard roaring from somewhere, its form faintly visible in the space it used to occupy, but that fades quickly as well.

Rock finishes patting down the flames surrounding him, ready for more.

Seeing the beast reappear before her, Kadol raises her staff towards the heavens. "Back, demon! Tae tha hell from whence ye came!"

A ripple of thunder tears through the sky above, and the invoker slams her staff into the ground. The earth beneath her staff splits and upheaves itself, and it appears as though a shockwave is passing through the earth on a direct line towards the overgrown simian. There is a sound like a great boulder being split open as the wave of upheaving earth reaches the ape, and a thunderclap sounds as overturned dirt and bits of grass are sent flying in several directions.

Readied Action: Thunder of Judgment on the young infernal berserker. 28 vs. Fortitude, hit for 14 damage, and it is dazed until the end of my next turn. I also push it southeast 4 squares (or as far back as I can push it without engulfing it in the treeline, giving it cover).

The barbarian's primal cry of battle fuels a brutal hit to the berserker. The berserker is quite furious but still in the battle, despite the debilitations piled on it. Acting on its instincts, it senses an opening and grabs Yagi Yuu. Finally capturing some sort of prey, it puts the squeeze on the knight, blood forcing open their wounds as they are slowly crushed.

Kadol moves closer into the fray, hoping for a better shot. Unfortunately, with the beast lying down, getting a good bead on it was hard. Nevertheless, she could clearly see the predicament the Goat-headed noble was in, and despite whatever distrust may exist between them, the dwarf felt compelled to help her ally. "Fall back, quickly!" With this she looks to the heavens and speaks a single word of power, which grants Yagi the strength to break free of the berserker's grip, and pulls both the barbarian and the fighter into a more advantageous position.

The invoker follows this by holding her staff with one hand, and holding the other hand up, palm-forward. "Soul-Forger Moradin, grant this instrument o' yer will tha power tae smite tha unholy!" As she prays, her hand glows white with divine power, and as the glow intensifies, it becomes a beam of searing energy which strikes in the direction of the fallen demon.

Lia darts out and lines up a shot at the Young Infernal Berserker. She fires her crossbow, the bolt whistling through the air as it plunges deep into the beast's chest, drawing blood and creating a deep wound that disorients the berserker. The artificer's living barbed wire adds further injury and squeezes ever tighter. The creature once again fails to catch the nimble elf before she ducks back into the woods and hides.

The Young Infernal Berserker lets out a primal roar as all its wounds erupt in fire. The creature is engulfed in flames, screaming in rage and agony while drawing strength from its pain to overcome its afflictions. Its injuries continue to burn like torches, embers dripping onto the ground beneath it, and the vegetation around it is quickly reduced to little more than a smoldering heap. The hulking monster leaps to its feet and hurls itself at the closest figures, intense heat overwhelming Yagi Yuu and Rock before they have a chance to retaliate, though Walala manages to offer Yagi some protection with an enchanted bolt. It slams into them with monstrous force and knocks them to the ground, leaving them teetering on the brink of death and barely able to move, though Rock manages to shake off the paralysis swiftly enough. The crippled pair are pushed out of its way and remain caught in the infernal aura, mere moments away from being roasted alive. The berserker keeps working itself into a frenzy, and looks primed to destroy everything it can get its hands on.

Kadol remains poised in a battle stance with her staff for several moments, then slowly relaxes when she realizes the fighting has ceased. Shifting into a more casual stance, the dwarf walks forward to silently take account of her allies' health, and assuming none are in immediate danger, she closes her eyes and kneels down to offer a prayer to Moradin.

Assuming no one has a Battle Standard of Healing or another reason to delay my rest, I will take a short rest and spend two healing surges to bring myself to full. My total of surges spent after the fact is four.

After waiting a moment to see if the beast is finally dead, Lia, furious at the burning of the forest, takes it upon herself to angrily run over and try and kick the hellforged razor a few times. Unfortunately, it's made of some sort of metal and she foolishly stubs her foot a little bit. Even more annoyed, she just decides to put a crossbow bolt in its head to assure that it is dead, before sulking off and taking a short rest.

Fays finds that the enemy was indeed wearing fireproof armor, and carried weapons that burned with intense heat. That is, except for the Hellforged Razer's battleaxe, which seems to be enchanted with something else. Other than that, the only object of interest to be found is a bayonet affixed to the front of the warlord's weapon.

Once Kadol finishes her prayer, she stands up and takes her staff into one hand like a walking-stick, and looks back to her allies. "If ye'll be done, ah suggest we get movin'." Noting the magical items gathered by the bard, the priest takes one of the magic sets of chainmail and stuffs it into her bag of holding, and will take any others that need to be taken. "Ah doubt tha be tha last o' tha obstacles b'fore us."

Rock finally calmes down from his berserker fury, licking his wounds a little as he approaches the others.

"Now that," he says excitedly, "was a good battle." The Barbarian shows zero interest in whatever was looted from the fallen. Nothing he brought with him needs replacing, and the foes weren't that good he'd want to use their stuff.

"So, we leavin'?"
