With few options available to them, the group heads north. The stretch of dead grass continues for a few miles before stopping outside a large cave entrance. This isn't the normal path through the mountains that travelers would normally take, but there haven't been any signs of pursuit yet. The cliffs seem too steep to navigate, and there's no sign of the pedestrian path, but odds are that the road has already been overrun by the cultists.

The dark cave entrance looms ahead, like a giant mouth waiting to swallow them up in the darkness.

Noting the darkness ahead, Yagi dismounts. Pulling out a sunrod, the knight activates it and attaches it to the horse's saddle.

Yagi then walks inside, leading the party horse.

The first thing Yagi notices when stepping into the cave is how damp it is. A fine mist covers Yagi, Kadol, and the injured mount, and the floor is slick with water. A few steps away from the goat-headed figure are a couple short drops in elevation, almost like stairs, coated in moss.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the cave, though, are the large, glowing mushrooms in the back. Towering over even the full height of the horse, their pale green light surrounds them like an eerie aura. There doesn't seem to be anything visibly menacing about them, but they don't look like something you'd want to eat.


Identifying the mushrooms requires a successful Nature check.

Upon following Yagi and Kadol into the cave, Fays comments to his allies "Mushrooms? More like fodder for fire if you ask me."

Walala walks into the cave without fear, increasing the amount of illumination offered by her internal glowing. She takes a Chemistry check to identify the souce of the glowing of the mushrooms.
"They glow just like me," she whispers or telepathically transmits to all within range. She contemplates breaking one open to see if there's a "soul" in there, but decides not to -- often in alchemy, when things glow, they're acidic. She reaches into her cloak and offers journeybread to Kadol, motioning at the mushrooms as if to make a joke about glowing mushroom sandwiches.
Extend zone of illumination to 5 spaces. Still in battle form, armed with wrist razors. Not gonna bother readying crossbow; passive perception probably trumps perception if I roll it.

Nature : This is a Lilypad Mushroom, a bioluminescent fungus which originates from the Feydark. Known to grow up to fifty feet in height, it can be found occasionally in damp cavern environments outside the Underdark, though nobody is certain why. They are inedible, but not poisonous, and are well regarded for their durability. It still isn't a good idea to burn them, though, as the fumes are somewhat noxious.

"What do I look like, a dwarf!?" she says inwardly again before looking longingly back towards the woods before sighing a little and making her way in with the others. Upon noticing the mushrooms, Lia tries to see if she can recall anything about that particular type.

Nature : You know what Kadol knows, in addition to the following:

The mushrooms get their name from the shape of their heads, which, from a certain perspective, resembles that of a lilypad. Also like a lilypad, the heads of these mushrooms are naturally buoyant. It always manages to right itself so the underside faces upwards.

At the end of its lifespan, the mushroom's head falls off, and the spores are released a few days later. However, it can survive afloat on river currents for several weeks thanks to its ability to float and natural equilibrium, and will wait until it finds a suitable environment to grow in that is several miles away from its initial location. For this reason, they are only found when there is a large source of flowing water nearby.

Kadol follows the goat noble from a distance, reading the note passed to her by the ranger and fighter. After taking in what it says, she says aloud, "Eh, tha mushrooms ain't quite as bad as they look, but ye still shouldn't burn 'em, it'd likely fill the cavern with noxious vapor. Tha heads o' tha mushrooms do, 'owever, float, and they're quite durable."

Yagi moves forward to cut down the biggest mushroom he can find. When he moves into the bigger chamber, he hears the sound of lightly flowing water coming from the north, probably a river.

The goat-head hacks at the thick base of the giant fungus, leaving a small gouge mark. The mushroom itself may take a while to cut down at this rate.

Rock, finally pleased to see they weren't being followed, chases after the others, into the cave.

"Wait up for me, darnit!" he calls, puffing up his cheeks. The shiny mushrooms are completely uninteresting to Rock, and he pays them no more than a passing glance as he catches up to Kadol.

"Nasty things... more monsters?" He's not as eager to fight monsters as he is to fight humanoids.

By the time all the adventurers have gathered in the cave, Yagi has finished chopping down the mushroom, which falls to the ground with a quiet thud, balancing on its rounded underside. The bottom of the plant is shaped like a bowl, and the top is mostly flat.

With Rock's help, Yagi brings the makeshift craft to the river. The mushroom head easily floats on the water, bobbing lazily against the current. It feels safe enough to board, but will probably get swept away shortly after being let go.

Lia eyes this idea curiously, as to sort of say,"Really? Is this really the choice we have? Riding a cave river on possibly unstable mushrooms? Not that we have much choice at this point anyway..." She treads carefully towards it, giving a quick balance check or two on it with her foot, before resigning herself to the idea of preparing to board the bigger mushroom.

Looking a bit nervous about the water, Kadol nevertheless hops on the mushroom and makes ready to set off. Dwarves weren't meant for marine life...

Clearing her throat and speaking out loud, she says, "Let's just hope we don't stir up a nest of lizardmen or somethin'."

With everyone on the platform, Yagi tosses the smaller mushroom a few feet ahead, which plops in the water before quickly righting itself. Using the halberds they took from their last encounter, the adventurers are able to cast off without issue and slowly paddle downstream.

The river opens up much wider rather quickly. You can't see the far walls, even by the light of the sunrod. The smaller lilipad mushroom bobs ahead of you, easily staying upright.

The party has a problem with that, though, as distributing weight to the wrong side could slide them off their float.

The river drifts about lazily for several hours (gonna need somebody to replace a sunrod). For the most part the current has been heading in a northern direction, although it's hard to tell when the cavernous walls are too far away to see.

Lia, Rock, Walala : Somewhere up ahead you can hear the sound of rushing water, which sharply contrasts with the tame ride you've had so far.

Walala notes the invoker's words, neither nodding nor shaking her head in disagreement. She telepathically transmits: If there is a fall or rapids ahead, we had best be prepared. She motions to the bottom of the mushroom. If there's a falls, we need to make the mushroom able to descend safely. If there are rapids, we need a counterbalance -- more weight. Each makes the other more dangerous. Unless you want to just go it ahead.

Without anything holding it back, the mushroom is swiftly pulled back into the current. The adventurers at the mercy of the raging river once more, the churning rapids draw ever closer.

However, there seems to be something in the upper corner of their vision. It looks like the edge of a dock. If the edge of a dock could be found underground for some reason. But the craft drifts further and further away from whatever it is, heading straight for what could very well be a waterfall.

Yagi throws a second hook at the rock wall, and it sticks firm once more. The current suddenly picks up, and the goat just has a moment to tie it to the stalk before the rope pulls taut, the mushroom lurching slightly, but the adventurers just manage to keep their footing. The boat swings up against the dock, bringing the full thing into view. The dock is short and made of wood, leading in briefly before a set of stairs, but you can't see further than that.

There's some sort of metal pipe a few feet away from the craft. It seems to be embedded in the rock wall.

Fays, Walala : You get a strong, terrible feeling of dread just being near the pipe. It's as if it's pumping pure nightmares through itself, and you can feel it from all the way over here. It feels malevolent and alien, instilling a horrible sense of "wrongness", of blasphemy against the natural world, of all consuming thirst for destruction. And wherever it's coming or going, something positively horrifying and dire must be happening.

Walala recoils in horror, nearly throwing the mushroom out of balance, then starts streaming pure telepathic fervor out at random; various images of creatures from beyond the gate trailing as an afterthought. Anger and exasperation permeate these messages, and she begins to quake. After regaining some trace of well-being, she shakes her head, her "voice" barely suppressing some sort of emotion that is quickly fading out. Whatever you do, don't let that pipe spew its contents, she transmits. ... and I would not like to continue along the path in which it is going.

The group at the head of the stairway can see the stairs head down a very long way. The horse looks rather uncomfortable at the prospect of climbing down stairs, and the assault of images didn't help steady its nerves. But the roar of the waterfall is no longer deafening, so at the very least it's somewhat calmer than sitting on a mushroom in wild waters.

Walala : From somewhere down the tunnel, you hear a child's voice sobbing loudly, screaming out, "Mommyyyyyyyy! Mommyyyyyyyy!" and generally calling for help. Sometimes it speaks in a language you don't understand, but it's not something that offends your senses, so as far as you can tell it's not the gibbering of Far Realm monstrosities. Whoever the voice belongs to, they sound very distressed and afraid.

Kadol quickly moves up behind the others, attempting to get as far away from the rushing water and the pipe as possible.

Rock makes to take off from the mushroom, but looks back at Lia who, for some reason, seems rooted in place. Not one to abandon a comrade, he takes her by the hand and drags her off the mushroom and onto the platform.

Still holding on to her, he guides her closer to the group, and with a shrug explains,
"I think she's finally lost it.

"So... I take it we're goin' on ahead, huh. Doesn't seem like't such a good idea to have taken up this job after all."

When the group reaches the bottom of the stairwell, they all hear a loud grinding sound, followed by the sound of something spinning and decelerating, like it lost its source of power. There would be an oppressive silence, if not for sobbing sounds coming from the east.

Inside the chamber, there seems to be a table with tools on it, like those an alchemist might use. Another table sits nearby, various liquids bubbling inside the containers. It's hard to say what there is to the north, and it looks like there's some light source to the west, but a large runed slab quietly glows a sinister color, its base connected to a series of tubes. There's some sort of console nearby, but you'd have to move closer to read it.

The unknown voice continues sobbing.


Feel free to make whatever checks you need, but I'm going to restrict movement to the same amount you could normally move during a round. In other words, if your movespeed is 6, you can move up to 12 squares, or 16 if you run.

Squares marked with white triangles are difficult terrain, and costs you an extra square of movement to enter.

Arcana : From what you can tell, the bubbling vials contain an alchemical compound very similar to alchemist's fire. The difference seems to be that this type is slower to burn and less prone to violent explosions. Mostly unsuitable for use as weaponry, it can be used for welding among other things.

A well-worn book lays open on the table, the writing in Common script. The page it's on contains theoretical analysis on the possibilities of fusing organic and inorganic matter through arcane methods to create a creature with the traits of both. The page has its corner folded.

As Yagi searches for an exit, he comes across an open furnace. There are tiny chunks of metal on the floor, so it may have been used as a crude type of forge. It's too big to see beyond it, though it appears to lead straight into a wall.

The circular apparatus to the north is fully revealed, but it doesn't seem to do anything at the moment. Beside it, a stack of barrels are partly revealed. Some random junk can be seen to the east. Past the circular apparatus, though, there is a ledge several feet above the party's heads. You cannot see anything on top of it, however.

The voice pleads once more, "Mommyyyy! Help Mommy!"

Showing more than a bit of concern for the voice that Kadol can now apparently hear, the dwarf takes a torch into one hand and begins searching the surrounding environment.

Kadol illuminates the surrounding gloom and bravely strides forward. The slab provides enough light for her to see a cage suspended several feet above their heads.

Passive perception (Kadol) : The crying is likely coming from inside the cage.
Passive insight (Kadol) : You cannot detect any malice from whatever is in the cage, only distress and anxiety.

"Now THA be strange," Kadol comments, looking up at the cage. "Ahm not one for pokin' my nose whar it doon't belong, but ah cannae ignore one in need." With that, the dwarf looks around for moveable objects to possibly stack in order to help her gain access to the cage.

Walala notices the invoker's movements towards the noise. She telepathically calls out, Don't brandish a weapon towards it. Any threatening movements could cost us when it comes to victimized allies... or any enemies. But proceed with caution; ready your defenses, physical, mental, and emotional. Whoa, that sounded cool.

Kadol nods to the psionic warning, then moves over to the table containing potions, and carefully transfers them to her bag of holding. Afterwards, she drags the table over to just beneath the cage, climbs up on top of the table, and has a look.

Loot the potions, use the table as a stepping-stone. Check the contents of the cage, and if it is locked or otherwise secured, and try to figure out how I can open it.

Swiping the contents off the table, Kadol reveals a skull design emblem beneath them, its tongue sticking out mockingly. This doesn't deter her from taking the table over and using it as a stepping stool to reach the cage. The river continues nearby with the same placidness it had for much of the cave, and a bridge goes over the water. Kadol stands on the table, able to see that the cage dangles from the ceiling by a chain, and is held shut by a simple yet strong-looking padlock. Peering inside, she can see that the prisoner...

...is a small, pitiful-looking green dragon, regarding her with absolute despair and much apprehension. Its eyes are streaked with tears, its wings and legs bound, and its body shaking in fear. This must be the source of the voice heard earlier.


Information about the dragon requires a successful Nature check. A Thievery check can be made to pick the lock or a [/b]Strength[/b] check can be made to break it.

The potions can be identified with a free action, but you must be able to see them.

"Guys, there'sa... creature up 'ere in this cage. It be all tied up, an' ah doon't think it means us 'ny harm," she holds her hand out, as if she expects someone to place something in it, and says, "Anywon gottaa knife er something? Ahd like tae try an' cut it free. It be unbelievably frightened an' alone, so ahd rather not leave it here."

Despite numerous suspicions about this (why would a dragon cry out in common, what was a baby dragon even doing here), Kadol resolves to herself that she cannot allow this creature to come to further harm, should it be within her power to do so.

Nature : This is an Emerald Dragon, and a very, very young one by the looks of it. Within three months of birth they grow a set of shiny green scales, yet this one seems to lack those.

Emerald dragons are known to be wiser than even the greatest of sages, and are highly inquisitive. They aren't very trusting, however, and will hide their lairs to the best of their abilities. Normally they live underground near cities and settlements, but they generally avoid drawing attention to themselves, and may live in the same area for several centuries before being discovered. Unlike chromatic and metallic dragons, gem dragons such as emerald dragons prefer total neutrality by nature.

An Emerald Dragon attacks with its claws, teeth, and breath like most other dragons. Its special affinity is that of thunder, as its breath can emit a burst of painfully loud noise that leaves foes reeling. In addition, they can focus their energy on a single point, creating a zone of sound that brings enemies to their knees. If all else fails, their gaze is capable of warding off predators and make them incapable of harming it.


The nearest settlement is far from here, though, so it shouldn't normally be found in the mountains like this. Especially not a baby one.

The heavy padlock comes off easily enough, and the dragon looks curious. It's still very scared, of course, but it is at least confused as to why its cage is being unlocked. It struggles weakly against its bonds in any case.

Kadol reaches over and slices the ropes the best she can using Lia's bolt. She then draws her hands back quickly, hoping to not appear threatening or the like to the dragon.

The dragon is captivated by the glamor projected from Walala, ever so gradually calming down. It flinches a little when the ropes are cut, but doesn't bite. It blinks its beady eyes and tries to stand up, slowly moving towards the opening in the cage. Regarding the adventurers with the wide-eyed amazement of babies everywhere, it speaks nervously, "Huh, huh, hi (draconic speak). You don't look like those bad hats." The creature peers out through the cage opening, "Are the bad hats all gone now?"

History : The name of the Heiho clan is one immersed in infamy. They were notorious for their debauchery, but at the time their superior knowledge of mechanics was needed to construct terrible war machines. When peace came at last, though, they were finally banished to a lonely mountain range that had been mined clean and sealed up in a cave in.

The strange thing is that this happened several hundred years ago, and there were no accounts of big noses, glowing eyes, or being comparatively smaller than other dwarves back then.

Kadol whispers to the wyrmling, "Stick close. We're gonna git ye out o' 'ere." She then hops down from the table, and motions for Rock and Yagi to get into position.

Just as soon as the adventurers finish preparing themselves, the floor opens up and a platform rises out from it. A group of tiny bearded men with glowing yellow eyes emerges from it, one riding atop a giant menacing wheeled contraption. The one in the cockpit speaks, "You shouldn'ta interfered with the sacrificing, you damned plebians. Now we're gonna have to dump you in the soup as well."

Dungeoneering : The Dagger Dwarves specialize in using the dagger to attack, then retreating to safety. They can attack with it, throw it, or bewilder a person and leave them dazed. They're good at evading opportunity attacks, and won't hesitate to steal from downed opponents. Finally, if they have combat advantage, their attacks deal more damage. They are level 5 skirmishers.

Digger Dwarves will tunnel below the earth before attacking, then return to the earth again. They prefer to hide before making attacks, and deal more damage when hidden at the start of their turns. The squares they burrow through become difficult terrain, and they take no penalty to stealth for moving more than two squares. Digger Dwarves are level 5 lurkers.

Swagger Dwarves attack with big hammers that deal a lot more damage if the target is prone, and even more if they have combat advantage, and inflict attacking penalties on a hit. If they miss, they can try to hit on the backswing, although this will leave them vulnerable if they miss. When their enemies are bloodied, they react with a terrible blow that knocks their foes down in an attempt to finish them off. The Swagger Dwarves are level 5 brutes.

The Welder Dwarf grants its nearby allies a +2 bonus to all saving throws, and attacks with sound and flame. It shakes off any dazing or stunning effects against it or its mount fairly quickly, and its mount can attack with it at the same time. Its bow shoots flaming arrows that bathe allies in an armor of fire, repelling attackers with terrible burns. It can pluck the bowstring to create a cacophonous sound that staggers enemies and leaves them open to an attack from its allies. While enough of its allies are alive, it can rally them together in thundering blast of magic that deals damage, dazes, deafens, and knocks them prone. When it's bloodied, it uses a much more focused version of this attack on a target that can stun them.

All of them have a strange aura about them, but it doesn't seem to affect their combat capabilities in any way.

Lia's arrow finds a gap in the mechanical monstrosity's armor, and the entire group is coated in a sticky webbing. The tank unwillingly moves closer to the knight while its rider curses the adventurers.

Arcana : The Heiho Tank features various defensive measures to protect its rider and allies, such as a securing harness to help keep the rider mounted and an attack against anything that targets the rider, or that targets an ally while marked. All of its attacks can mark, and it can reduce forced movement distances by a square. When attacking, it can ram opponent and knock them away and down, fire on them and slow them, move and fire at the same time, or use a powerful blast of sound that knocks an enemy senseless. Its Force Tether reels in whatever it grabs, where anything that gets too close is subjected to its drill for extreme damage. It will repel attackers who try to flank it, and can follow its master's orders even when dismounted. Disabling it requires a DC 25 Thievery check or DC 27 Arcana check, and it can be reactivated with a DC 15 Thievery or Arcana check.

Walala's explosive concoction fires into the fray and burns a few of the dwarfs, but it only seems to anger them. Fays tries to strike one with a cursed arrow, but it sails over their heads.

Through a combination of force and leverage, the knight manages to knock the tank onto its side, to the great vexation of the welder dwarf. Things seem pretty bad for the dwarves, and one of them seems to run away, disappearing into the earth without a trace.

But then the tank's 'jaw' springs out, bashing the horse against the wall and putting it out of its misery. Yagi falls to the ground and the tank rights itself,
"Go, my precious! Destroy the enemies of the great Archmagus!" The welder dwarf screams, smashing its fist on a button. The machine's turrets turn on the goatman and open fire, though a timely intervention from Walala manages to shield from the worst of the damage. The tank lumbers forward as the Welder dwarf plucks a horrid melody on its bowstring, but Kadol stands fast, and the dwarf stomps its feet again. Acting as one, the tank opens its 'mouth' and fires several strands of light that latch around Fays and hold him tight.

Now the battle begins in earnest.

Despite being underground, those present can clearly hear ripples of thunder resounding through the rock all the way deep into the cavern where they now stand. Kadol Stormbrew, dwarf invoker, slowly strides forward, announcing in a voice that sounds as though she is on the edge of blowing her cool, "Ye who dared tae ferget yer honor and yer heritage tae unleash such blasphemy on tha world... ye who've spat in Moradin's proverbial eyes..." at this, the priest of the Soul-Forger drops the torch she holds and grips her staff tightly with both hands, and it quakes in her grip, as if barely containing a great power. "JUDGMENT BE UPON YE!"

When the invoker pounds her staff into the cavern floor, the whole mountain seems to reel as three shockwaves emanate from the base of her staff and upheave the ground before her feet, shooting like subterranean bullets towards the tank, its mechanic, and the unlucky aberrant dwarf that happened to be nearest.

Move to -AQ-83.
Use a free action to drop my everburning torch and grip my staff in both hands.
Use thunder of judgment, targets: the tank, the welder, and Sleazy. Push destinations: attempt to move Sleazy to -BB-87, if he reduces by 1 he ends up at -BA-87 (if these dwarves don't reduce push distance I just move him to -BA-87); attempt to push welder to -BA-88, if he reduces by 1 he ends up at -AZ-88; attempt to push tank back to -AZ-87/88/89, if it reduces by 1 it ends up at -AY-86/87/89. All of the targets that I hit take 12 thunder damage and are dazed until the end of my next turn. Sleazy is CRIT for 22 thunder damage instead of 12.

Kadol's eyes glow brightly and seem to leak electricity as she waves her staff, slowly, in front of her with one hand. She follows her initial announcement with a second, "Now, feel tha Soul-Forger's wrath!"

It's a bit of an odd sight to see lightning originate from the ceiling of a cavern, but that's exactly what happens as Kadol calls down a storm of lightning in the midst of he gathered foes. One after another, in the space of a mere few half-seconds, dozens of thunderbolts strike down, again and again. When the storm finally ceases, the smell of ozone and burnt hair emanates heavily from the spot, and all those that were hit are left exposed to further attack.

Kadol relaxes a hair and looks around, her keen dwarven senses scanning the area for the one that burrowed away.

Kadol's divine lightning leaves many of her foes in a bad state, save for Fury, who manages to avoid the attack. One of the dwarves hurls a dagger at Kadol, but the attack is wildly off its mark. Frightened, the dagger thrower screams, "No, no, no, you're not getting my things! I'll never let you have them!" as it shifts away and dives behind a pillar.

The shifter rushes the dagger dwarf and gores it with a brutal charge, whirling about to attack the welder dwarf and knock it off its perch, but it stands fast. Both dwarves are now bloodied, the welder snarling and screaming aloud, all the nearby dwarves joining in as a shockwave streaks from its bow and knocks the dragon out of the air. Yagi retaliates and slashes the dwarf, slowing its movements again. Rock taps into his primal fury and whirls about, slashing all the nearby foes as he enters his rage, his gouge becoming a whirling instrument of death in his hands. One of the dwarves drops dead right there, but suddenly is consumed by black fire and crumples to dust, eldritch whispers emanating from where its corpse would be.

The digger that disappeared earlier pops up behind Rock and screams,
"Sneak attack!" before its pick barely grazes the barbarian. Hungry groans and mumbles, shifting away before burrowing underground again. However, the more perceptive members of the party pinpoint its location underground, ruining its element of surprise.

While the tank manages to unjam its wheels, the wrath from Rock's earlier attack made a crack that grows wider as it rights itself. It futilely attempts to push away Yagi before the dragon's early sonic attack scrambles its circuits and leaves it immobile and in even worse shape. Fortunately its automated repairs prevent the crack from spreading further, but the damage has already been done.

Meanwhile, the bleeding welder dwarf keeps smashing the console in an attempt to push away the adventurers swarming the tank. A hit made against Yagi knocks him into a corner and knocks him down, but Rock barely avoids such an attack. Just when it seems both of them are overcoming the worst of their afflictions, a powerful burst of sonic energy rip the dwarf out of its safety harness and sends it crashing to the ground. Haughty screams,
"You can't do this to me! I refuse to die to such loathsome vermin!" and thrashes on the ground as he throws a tantrum. The small dragon shakes off the stun and looks ready to fight again.

Rock CRITS Whiney for 42 damage, bloodying him
Rock's Rampage allows him to make an MBA against the welder for 19 damage, bloodying it

Upon seeing the dragonling fall, Kadol cries out, "Be strong, young'un!" Striding forward, the dwarf takes note of the distant, wounded knight, and issues another call, this one infused with divine power, "Tha goat-head needs aid, friends. Yet stand fast, and fight!" She raises her staff high, and opens her free hand outwards, palm-forward, as it glows with radiant energy. "Tha Soul-Forger favors us today!"

Walala makes a valiant effort to help bring down the tank, but her attacks either miss or are harmlessly deflected off its plating. Her healing power does at least bring Yagi out of a dangerous state.

The other Digger Dwarf pops out of the ground and strikes Kadol from behind, drawing blood. The invoker responds in kind by drawing on the power of her faith to repulse the offender away. Unphased, the Digger Dwarf burrows underground once more.

Yagi's charge misses its target at first, and the tank retaliates with a bolt of lightning that grazes Yagi. Fays manages to enchant an arrow that strikes true against the Welder Dwarf's defenses, setting Yagi up for a second attack. This time the hit strikes true, and the dwarf's head is severed from its body before being consumed by black flames, the only remains of it left behind being its bow. With the welder dwarf dust, there's nothing left to control the tank, and a warning klaxon sounds from inside as it stops differentiating between enemy and ally.

"The battle sounds like it's starting to wind down, but with the driver out of commission, looks like that foul contraption is going to still be a problem..", Lia thinks to herself as she shifts from out behind the pillar and looks for a target. Seeing the wounded hammer dwarf, Lia takes aim at it to try and finish it off, or at least slide it towards the tank. Lia's shot from the dark pierces through Sleazy's helmet, the dwarf crumpling into a heat before being consumed by eldritch fire. The other Swagger Dwarf doesn't seem concerned, and hefts it warhammer at Rock. The barbarian ducks out of the way, but is caught from behind by the warhammer swinging back, receiving serious injuries. Fury whips his hammer back and tries to pound Rock into rubble, but Rock rolls out of the way in the nick of time. It seems that the dwarf's no longer bleeding heavily, but it is still seriously wounded.

Kadol digs into her own inner strength to save the others the burden of healing her, amplifying her dwarven resilience with her magical amulet. She then moves into a better position, and holds out her hand once more, chanting a brief prayer before unleashing holy rays of light from her outstretched hand.

Rock provokes a counter from the tank, but the bolt of lightning only grazes the barbarian, who takes out the dwarf and uses the momentum to smash into the tank for a hefty amount of damage. The nearby dwarf stands up and shifts away from the tank, not wanting to get caught up in the crossfire. Deeming the barbarian to be too big a threat to ignore, the Heiho Tank rights itself and charges a beam weapon. Rock's efforts to interrupt its attack prove fruitless, and its struck hard by a sonic projectile and left for dead several feet away. The next most dangerous target is determined to be Yagi, who is wrapped up tightly in a rope of pure force. However, the tanks mobility systems are scrambled by the dragon's zone of sound, and it suffers for not moving.

Kadol heals her injuries and strikes the Digger Dwarf with a blast of radiant energy, her shot wildly missing the tank. The dwarf seems to be inches from death now. From the shadows a dagger just barely misses the emerald dragon, as the dagger dwarf skirts closer to the battle, eying the downed barbarian and giggling insidiously.

Lia's gleeful shot at the dwarf hits its mark, and the confused miner suddenly finds himself unable to move. Rock springs to his feet and smashes the tank with his gouge, rending off a good portion of its engine through the armor. The tank sputters briefly, then loses power and chokes, giving no indication that it will ever be reactivated through the smoke and fuel pouring out of where its engine used to be.

Both aberrant dwarves are struck dead on by Kadol's burst of radiant power, as weak as it was. However, the digger dwarf has started to pale, and the dagger dwarf looks like it's hanging on by a thread. It mumbles curses at the adventurers, growling at them even as it draws much closer to death. Stingy snarls, drawing on false bravado as it threatens the group, "Last chance... Gimme everything you got... Mine... All mine..."

The young dragon rips into the dwarf savagely with its claws. Stingy starts to choke as blood pours from his mouth before he, too, bursts into flames and becomes a smoldering pile of ash. The remaining dwarf drops its pickax and whimpers, "Ah dun wanna die! Ah give up, ah give--" His pleas are cut short as his hands shakingly grasp the warpick and plunge the tip through its throat. The digger dwarf's face registers a look of shock and terror in its final moments, before it and all of its equipment, are consumed by mysterious flame. The only signs that the dwarves were ever there are the scorch marks etched into the ground by their destruction, and the bow the welder left behind.

As soon as the battle ends, the emerald dragon walks over and kicks at the tank wheels with its stubby legs in defiance of his previous captors. The hatch on the tank suddenly pops open, and the adventurers can see there is a space below the cockpit which, in spite of poor lighting, seems to have something inside.

Suddenly there is a crashing noise coming from the nearby river, and the sounds of splintering wood echo through the otherwise quiet chamber. The dragon yelps and hides behind Kadol, trembling slightly. At the same time, the sigil that was on the slab the pipes connected to disappears in a puff of smoke, lacking the power necessary to sustain itself.

The only sounds now are the small waterfall, the river, and the nearby furnace's fire crackling occasionally, smoke drifting through its pipe to presumably somewhere on the surface.

Kadol takes a moment to comfort the dragon after seeing the aberrant "dwarves" meat their end. "There, now, youngling. The bad-hats are gone. Let's get to finding your mother. First, though, take a rest. That fight has likely worn us all down."

Making sure the emerald wyrmling is okay, Kadol then moves to the tank and peek into the hatch, aiming to confiscate whatever the aberrants left inside.

The small dragon nods quietly and lays down flat on the ground, looking rather skittish but otherwise calmed by the dwarf's kind words. Kadol takes a few minutes to rest before examining the broken tank's opening. A ladder below the seat leads inside of the tank, which has the capacity to carry at least six people. The walls are covered in complicated panels and instruments that are of no use now that the tank is non-functioning. However, strewn across the floor are a few items of interest, presumably belonging to the Welder Dwarf. A set of goggles sits in a corner on top of a pair of platinum armbands, said armbands having a deep red ruby affixed to them; An extremely well worn cedar wand sits on top of those; In a small cubbyhole a tiny, spherical rock of white marble sits on top of a pair of books. In all likelihood the dwarf wasn't expecting intruders and thus didn't have enough time to remove them or equip them.

And outside the tank, a bow that looks very similar to Fays' sits in the Welder's scorched remains. This one looks more ornate, though, much like one of those songbows most bards use.

Kadol doesn't find anything else in the immediate area.

Kadol peruses the contents of the spellbook, its contents written in crude dwarven. The pages are yellowing with age and the ink is smudged in a few places, but she finds many different creation rituals within the tome. Towards the back of the book are other rituals, but they're written in Deep Speech and the contents are impossible to decipher due to the decay of time and heavy used. From what little can be discerned, these rituals appear to pertain to creating constructs such as golems with organic materials and fusing organic creatures with non-organic materials, spells that were considered taboo and supposedly destroyed a long time ago. One particular spell header says something that could be interpreted as "The Blessing of Archmagus Wiseman" but due to the wording could also translate to "The Curse of Archmagus Wiseman", where the only words that stand out amidst the garbled text are "soul", "immortal", and "punishment".

Learning the spells would probably take a couple hours.

Having knowledge of both dwarven and deep speech, Kadol nods sagely at the contents of the rituals before closing it abruptly. "These unsavory customers were apparently practicin' some rituals equally unsavory." Kadol grabs the armbands for herself, then calls out, "There be some treasures in 'ere, if any of ye wanna lay claim!"

The dwarf hops off the tank, and begins to look around the open area, searching for things the dwarves might have left behind, keeping one eye on the wyrmling to make sure it doesn't wander off or anything.

Kadol's search of the surrounding area doesn't yield any interesting results. The only things of note are that the barrels are full of what can only be vaguely considered beer because it contains some of the ingredients, and the console near the slab, which has no power. The barrels the beer is kept in smell awful, and the liquid inside probably tastes even worse.

If yer interested, I think there's also an alchemical cookbook in there." After saying so, Kadol goes and picks up her discarded everburning torch, holding her staff in one hand once more.

The relative quiet of the short reprieve is broken by a growling sound. The dragon groans, suddenly looking quite exhausted. "Bad Hats didn't give me food. So hungry..." Its eyes are drawn to a distant furnace, the flames licking at the hot coals within. As if in a trance, the emerald dragon flies closer and closer. Then it drops down a few feet away from the fire, going around the edge. It returns clutching a coal shovel in its mouth, which it uses with surprising precision to scoop out some of the coals that lay on the floor, pushing them away from the heat of the furnace. Then it drops the shovel and bites into them as though they were kibble, making a crunching sound as its jaws crush the "food".

Kadol, a bit concerned, heads over to the forge, but is relieved when it discovers the dragonling is only munching on coal. Nodding, she searches the apparently untouched surroundings of the forge area where the dragon was eating.

The small dragon doesn't seem too concerned, but it does follow behind Kadol at a distance, nibbling at its spoils. From the front, the furnace looks pretty ordinary, but when Kadol moves around to the other side, her light reveals a passage behind it, something that would be very hard to see from the front.

Kadol's slow approach doesn't trigger any sorts of traps, nor does there seem to be anything out of the ordinary. A faint smell of something burning comes from up ahead, but it's more of something that had been melted for a long period of time, then cooled. As she draws closer, the passage opens up into a larger room with a faint coat of ash covering the floor. A pile of shovels lies strewn about near the doorway, next to what might be some sort of vat. The smoldering scent seems to be coming from that.

But that's hardly important when there are two, maybe three unopened chests of varying makes and sizes directly ahead. Even the little dragon's natural curiosity is piqued enough for it to wander forward and look at the possible treasure inquisitively and with some sense of wonder, though it still stays very close to Kadol.

The treasure chest lid pops open with a little provocation, the lid seemingly on a spring of some kind to make opening it easier. The contents within are revealed to the soft light of Kadol's torch, though they don't shimmer, glimmer, sparkle or shine like most would expect of treasure kept in a chest. Rather, it seems to be filled with enchanted equipment of various sorts. There's a large crossbow that looks like it could be attached to something, a gouge with an especially wicked spearpoint, a set of gloves, and a pair of glasses. They don't seem to have any particular reason to be clumped together like this.

Kadol forces all the treasure chests open, the contents spilling out before the lids snap shut again. They seemed to be designed for getting rid of things conveniently rather than for keeping valuables. None of the things glimmer with gold, but a wealth of other odds and ends are strewn onto the floor unceremoniously, the loud noise of metal hitting stone echoing through the cavern.

The iron chest in the back, however, seems designed to actually keep people from taking its contents unless they have the key. The lock is thick, tough, and bears an insignia shaped like a scowling dwarf's face. The chest itself seems very solid too. There was no such key to be found inside the tank or from the remnants of the dwarves. It could very well have been dropped into the river, or simply be lost. Either way, it's not a simple lock to break. This lock requires a thievery check (moderate DC) or strength check (high DC) to open

Far in the back sit a pair of large vats. They seem unremarkable, at least going by appearance.

"Yo, dwarf," the Shifter starts, "ain't we supposed to be on the run? Hauling all this loot's gonna bog us down, y'know?"

Nonetheless, the Barbarian voices his intent to help her carry, because he's seen a thing or two on that nobleborn, and burdening themselves is probably an inescapable consequence of the discovery.

Walala hurries over to the treasure vale and starts giggling (silently) in glee at all the enchantments and arcane wonders. She would be biting her lip grinning if she could. Snatching the armbow and wand and taking a wistful glance at the horned helmet, she heads to the iron chest. She then deals with the lock on the treasure chest, using a floating shard as a lockpick.

Kadol shakes her head, exasperated. "It's not as if I was lookin' fer treasure--but we've found it, so it'd be silly not tae make use of it. 'Sides!" Kadol picks up the summoning stone and indicates it to the barbarian, "This little thing we found, we kin use it tae summon tha noble's boat tae US. These aberrants have some nice toys. An' tha underground river's gotta slow an army down quite a bit. So! Tha chest over there," the dwarf indicates the chest she couldn't open with her quarterstaff poking, "Seems tae need a little encouragement. See if ye can't force it open. It's probably got somethin' REALLY nice if it be locked an these others weren't."

While the other adventurers take some share of the loot, Kadol checks the large vats in the back. They give off a faint heat, and she notes that there are ashes scattered around the bases of them, which rest on a grill over a pile of coal. It takes some maneuvering, but Kadol is able to examine the insides of the vats without knocking them over.

Whatever was being done with them, the contents within have cooled enough to become solid. One vat is filled to the brim with residuum, the other weighed down heavily with melted gold. Both have hardened into the shape of their containers, and are firmly wedged inside.


The artificer in the back works delicately with the makeshift lockpick, the movement of the tumblers echoing softly. With a click, the lock falls off and the box springs open, hurling its contents at the artificer before snapping shut again.

The most obvious thing that springs out is a brass rod etched with runes of Primordial origin. A small, cloudy globe of glass sits atop it, the insides swirling hypnotically as though they were clouds blown by the wind. A platinum band inset with a shining diamond landed a few feet away, and it seems large enough to fit around one's waist. A pair of fine chainmail gauntlets narrowly avoid hitting Walala's head, both inset with ruby studs. Strangely, they both seem to be for the same hand. A badge of bone and hide flips into the air like a coin and lands on top of the chest. A hood of shining chainmail bounces off Walala's shoulder. And a small silver canteen that smells of fine ale is thrown into the corner.

There doesn't appear to be anything else in the chest, besides its spring-loaded mechanism.

Kadol is rather irritated by the shifter's attitude. She feels like asking him just how far he thinks he would have gotten without the power of Moradin aiding the group, but thinks better of it and merely snorts, "Ne'er mind tha chest. These big pots could use a lil brute strength tae break open. Tha contents look quite useful." The dwarf points as the nearby towering vats.

Kadol, seemingly a bit miffed by the party's apparent disinterest in the treasures before them, goes and retrieves the steadfast amulet, in addition to the sorcerous bracers, the staff of the war mage, and the aversion staff she has already picked up. "Move it or lose it, rabble. We've got tae get back on tha run." After a moment's hesitation, she also takes the Endless Canteen of Liquid Gold, and stores it away quickly.

Rock frowns at Kadol's apparent irritation, and shakes his head in disapproval. 'Someone's oughta bed her,' he thinks to himself, recognising quite well how women of the shifters at home also grow irritable when they've not had a man in a while.

Not that he's intent on the dwarf. Dwarves, pfft.

Still, despite his admonitions, Rock begins gathering together bits and pieces of equipment that may just make his life a little easier, if not annoy Kelemvor in awaiting their souls for a bit longer.

When Rock's done changing parts of his equipment and stashing his trusted cloak and armour away, he turns away and makes back for the spot the dwarves came from. Heavens know he wants to get outta here already.


Take Vanguard Gouge, Marauder's Leather Armour, Horned Helm, Badge of the Berserker, Boots of Adept Charging. Keep Deep-Pocket Cloak and Shockweave Armour in inventory.

"Arrite then," Kadol says after sipping a rather large drought of the ale from the endless canteen, "let's get going." With that much, the dwarf invoker heads for the bridge, doing her best to herd the rest of the incompetents along, and making sure the young dragon isn't too far behind.

Stow away my magic staff and the Endless Canteen. Equip Sorcerous Bands and Steadfast Amulet. Hold the Staff of the War Mage in off hand, and the Aversion Staff in the main hand. Holy symbol tied to the top of the Aversion Staff. Move towards the bridge with intent to cross it.

Abandoning the vats, the adventurers regroup and head west toward the bridge. The small dragon stays near Kadol, running to keep up with the group. When they pass by the pipes again, there's no lingering feeling of terror, so whatever happened, the 'nightmare fuel' isn't being pumped anymore. The empty cage swings quietly overhead, and the roar of the waterfall grows louder. The entire area is covered in a fine, wet mist.

Near the bridge used to be a waterwheel, as some might recall. That seemed to have shattered into pieces now drifting near the end of the river. If not for the guardrail, they'd likely overflow onto the nearby dry land. There's more wood than would normally be found from just one or two waterwheels, which is odd. Sitting on top of the debris is the lilypad mushroom you rode on earlier, covered in scuff marks and looking somewhat worse for wear. There's just a big wall over there, so the river likely runs onward through an opening underwater, making that a non-option.

The bridge seems solid enough, though it might be a little slick from the water. But what would be on the other side anyway?

Neither the shardmind nor the dwarf encounter any problems crossing the bridge, though the wyrmling does slip and slide down to the other side. With more illumination, the party can see a set of dynamos on either side of the river, which were probably attached to the waterwheels. Set into the ground directly in front of Kadol and Walala is a very large steel structure, a noxious purple smoke coming from the swirling froth inside. Eyes peer back from the mixture, and occasionally a mouth rolls to the surface and gnashes its teeth at the adventurers. Both Kadol and Walala get the same uneasy feeling from this substance that the pipes gave them. Once in a while a faint glimmer of gold can be seen, and is quickly consumed by a slimy maw.

The dragon shrieks and hides behind Kadol, whimpering,
"I think that's what those Bad Hats was making! They was gonna drop me in that stuff!"

The addition of Rock's sunrod fully illuminates the eldritch concoction, showing the pit to be positively enormous. A pipe presumably fed something into it, although it, like everything else, seems to be offline. A table to the west is loaded with large capsules of some kind, all stacked neatly into a large pyramid shape.

Kadol's torch illuminates a wall, as there is nothing to find behind the machinery. Toddling behind, the dragon sniffs at the capsules inquisitively as Kadol inspects them.

All of the are about half a foot in size and as transparent as glass. Inside is a clear liquid that bears some resemblance to the alchemist's fire derivative you found earlier. They seem solid enough in spite of the curious wyrmling's prodding, and from the few samples laying on the floor, they're likely stable enough to not combust due to a little trauma.

After gathering up some of the items, save for the bolts (leaving those to Walala), she equips them all, looking slightly weirder. Before the Barbarian can finish the words out of his latest sentence, Lia is over the bridge (carefully, might I add), and looking at the pit from a distance, trying to fight all instincts to flee at once from this thing. Somehow managing to form an intelligent thought, she walks over to Kadol before writing on a small piece of torn off paper, almost writing it in some sort of mix of common and Elven, cause of being so frightened,"Isn't there some way we can safely destroy or shut down that foul eldritch pit?"

Reading Lia's message, Kadol looks over at the rather unsightly device behind the group and says, "Ah wish I knew how... just messin' with it seems kinda risky." She looks over to the bard and the artificer, and suggest, "Maybe one o' yas who's learned well in arcane can tell us wha ye make o' tha big toothy hole o'er there?"

For her own part, Kadol takes a good, long look around the cavern surrounding the strange portal device, the stairs, and the alcove at the top of the stairs.

Arcana : This appears to be some sort of creation ritual, like the sort used to create golems. Besides the standard spell components, the parts composing it that you can see are gold with bits of residuum speckled in it, bones of various dragons, and a large amount of beholder's blood and other aberrations mixed together, giving it the purple color and the other horrific qualities. Incomplete as it is, it will continue emitting toxic fumes for several days, but has less than a forty percent chance of bringing forth any sort of abomination on its own before going inert. Neutralizing it would require applying intense heat to the the concoction for an extended period of time, which a flaming arrow by itself cannot do.

After Fays relays what he knows about the ritual to the party, he examines the parchment on the table. The writing on the paper keeps shifting around into strange and terrible symbols, but his reading spectacles are able to decipher them readily. :

The Archmagus bestows upon our first disciples the following message,

For your continued services to our cause, we will grant you the revenge you seek against the scum of Moradin. Our rituals will make your weapon unstoppable, and their nations shall crumble beneath its mighty wings. We only require you to retrieve the most crucial ingredient yourselves tomorrow night, while the master of the den is out. If you succeed, our agents of the fraternity shall trap our hated nemesis, and remove their accursed spell from our [soul cage]. Worry not about their scrying, for they shall not find you until it is too late, and true immortality will be ours once more.

Be quick, be silent, and be unseen. We will not tolerate failure. Your immortal souls shall be forfeit if you cannot succeed at your task. Do not disappoint us.

By now, the invoker has figured out that the barbarian isn't going say anything useful, so Kadol ignores his comment and walks over to the table where the rest of the capsules are, and takes out the three she picked up earlier. She takes out her standard-issue adventurer's kit set of flint and tender, and gets to trying to set one of the capsules alight with her flint and tender. If that is successful, she will use that capsule to spread the fire to a few others, and start tossing the flaming capsules into the goo.

The capsule lands in the goop with a splash, bobbing to the surface after a moment. The teeth and fangs that swirl around the mixture gnaw at the casing around it, biting holes in the protective shell. The clear substance trickles out, pooling at the top of the vat like oil, giving it a rainbow-like sheen. Once the capsule dissolves completely, the muck seems to 'calm down', the fuel swirling around on the top.

Satisfied that this new measure should work, Kadol goes ahead and adds three more capsules to the mix. She prepares to ignite the resulting mixture with a blast of lightning.

Readied action: lightning's revelation on the fuel when the three capsules have been broken up. Then start a short rest.

At Kadol's command, lightning lances from her stave and ignites the oil in the vat. There is a loud screeching noise as the mixture starts to churn, bubble and froth angrily. The fire as towers out of the vat with more heat and power than one would expect from such a small source of ignition. All the while the mixture screams its cacophonous cries, its contents being broiled into a fine soup.

The wyrmling hides behind Kadol, obviously terrified at the spectacle.

"I know it's harsh, but we're gettin' rid of this thing. Can't be lettin' someone else make use o' it, even if that dwarves be gone," Kadol says in a focused tone. She continues to watch the mixture froth and boil, and if it ever seems like it will cease to burn before the scary teeth and eyes are completely erased, she will add another capsule.

It takes a few minutes, but eventually the cries die down completely, the vat completely silent. The smog seems to have stopped.

"Um, um... Can we go now?" the little dragon queries, "I'm worried about mommy."

As if on cue, the text from the letter that Fays read scatter across the paper angrily. The wording shifts before his eyes into something different.

A group of meddlers was chased through the southern woods of the Gray Forest. They managed to subdue some of our scouts and one of our brutes. If you find them, show them no mercy.

Finish short rest to recharge lightning's revelation.

Kadol, satisfied that the gaping maw to a literal embodiment of wailing and gnashing of teeth is quite sealed up, nods to the wyrmling and says "I agree. We've spent enough time 'ere now." Walking up the stairs, Kadol notes the paper with the words that are changing and comments, "Best take tha with us. Could prove useful, and I'd rather not leave it for others tae find." With that, the invoker walks into the dwarf-sized tunnel, and attempts to light up the area around the far corner.

Kadol heads into the small dark opening and around the corner, looking beyond to see what lies ahead. What she is able to find is that there is still nothing but darkness up ahead, but the path continues straight for as far as the everburning torch will illuminate. From up ahead the sounds of rushing water grow louder, much like they did when the group encountered the rapids.

"Clear so far," Kadol calls back to the rest of the group. She then moves on ahead towards the sound of the water, carefully, content that if the tunnel wasn't already flooded it wasn't going to.

It doesn't take very long for Kadol to find the end of the tunnel. It opens up into a much larger cavern, and a convenient pier at the end of the tunnel overlooking it. The currents are running swiftly beneath, the surrounding walls pitch black even under the light of the everburning torch. Oddly enough, there's nothing even resembling a boat to be found here.

Well, isn't that convenient. Or inconvenient, depending on how you want to look at it. "An empty pier up 'ere," Kadol announces loudly to the group that she hopes is following her. "We'll need a boat or somethin' tae cross." She's not so subtly hinting at something here.

The stone crumbles to dust in Yagi's fist, arcane power gathering in the air before the group. A faint silhouette of something very large fades into existence, hovering a foot above the water. Cracks of coloration spread over the shadow, the sound of splintering wood and twisting metal drowning out the roar of the river below. Bits of rope lash out and tie onto parts of the craft like a giant spiderweb. The cannons appear in a fiery explosion. And stitch by stitch the sails rise up the masts.

It takes a minute or so, but soon, a fully formed sailing ship drop into the water, anchored just a few feet away from the dock.

Uneasily, Kadol tries to find a way to board the boat. Dwarves and seacraft... they don't mix. Scowling she looks back to the group and comments, "I hope one o' ye knows how tae steer this thing."

The barbarian follows the rest of the group, quietly growling and mumbling to himself about how much of a time-wasters the lot of them are and if they'd hurried up some heroes would deal with whatever monstrosities.

He's long since stopped thinking himself smart for taking up this job. Quitting at first sight, yes sir.

With the anchor pulled, the boat lurches forward, cutting through the waters like a butcher's knife. Though the trip is slow, the current is much calmer and easier to handle than it was earlier. But at the speed they travel, it'll take a couple of days to reach their destination.

At the very least, they make it out of the cave and back outside before dusk. The wyrmling, in the meantime, sits at the bow of the ship and watches anxiously for a familiar landmark.

In spite of its enormous size, the ship flows smoothly downstream. There is no indication as to why it was unmanned at the time it was brought over, but the river providing its own current makes the sails unnecessary and steering easy enough that only one person need man the helm at a time. The voyage is rather slow, but with no signs of pursuit, it's much less stressful than the past few days.

The wrymling seems much happier to be out of the cave, proving to be friendly and amiable, if naive and childish. The dragon does keep mentioning its mother, though, and wondering if she is in trouble. Despite protests from some parts of the party, it claims that she knows a great deal - enough, perhaps, to help them deal with the cultists and collect their pay without any further hassle. After a few more rounds of questioning, the dissenters reluctantly agree to accompany it to its cave. If nothing else, it could provide a place to hide for a time. And, of course, the dragon does give a name to itself, and says that it is called "Errol".
