How silly, Santa and I had 3 small glasses of whisky and a glass of cognac each, a perfectly sensible amount.
I only ever get drunk on cheap rum, I wouldn't even dream of drinking more than 3 glasses of a whisky that cost £61 for a single bottle. That's the kind of treasure to be savored over a long period of time, you see.

I figured as much. Good thing I've been brushing up on my moonrunes daily, I plan to try my hand at reading through Celenaria as practice after this download finishes, and then Sona-Nyl if Celenaria goes well.
If not, then back to grinding 20-30 kanji a day for a few more months. I'd quite like to read through Cross Channel and Saya no Uta in the original Japanese as well, actually.

>Celenaria

I haven't looked at Celenaria since it's not that well received by Ixrec. (7/10 is bad) To be frank, when I read Vns in japanese I rely more on the audio than text since it's easier to understand the general gist of the text.

You could just aim for the harder ones like FSN in japanese etc.

The spoken lines also make it easier to determine the meaning of the kanji sometimes, so I agree with you there. I like reading every novel or VN in a series once I've started though, so I'll be reading through Celenaria sooner or later anyway. It's a bad habit, really.

>FSN in japanese
Are you kidding, I had enough trouble getting through that in English. If I'm aiming for difficult Japanese VNs to read through then I'll probably pick up Muramasa or something instead, since translation never, etc.

You should've tried opening up Majikoi on December 24, Umeko-sensei has a special Christmas greeting message instead of the usual "minatosoft" introduction.

It also happens on every single one of the characters' birthdays, there are spoken lines by a bunch of characters wishing each other a happy birthday. It's pretty neat, actually.

There seems to be something in the program that reads the time and date from your computer's settings, so you can actually trick the game into thinking it's a certain date to hear the birthday and Christmas introductions whenever you want just by changing the date on your computer.
It's nothing too special really, but I've always found things like that to be a pretty nice touch by the creators. The fact that they bothered to record a birthday message for all of the 30+ characters in Majikoi was pretty nice, too.

What makes you say that? I was just making an amused observation of the corner of drinkers and how I seemed to be (and accurately so) the drunkest of the lot. You also earn two bonus points for using "Guest" over "John," though "Onii-chan" would've scored you another bonus point on top of that.

Well, drinking seems to be part of Christmas.
Yes, you are the drunkest since you seem to be the top dog when drinking. I'd surround you by bottles of whiskey and beer, but as you can see, the space is limited.

Well, you have been Guest longer than John now, so I think it's appropriate. Though I hope you don't mind sticking you with Amakusa. I know how you and a few others like changing personas all the time.

Onii-chan seems weird since the labeling is third person. Otherwise, I would have labeled me "I" instead of "Illya"

Well, I do prefer "Guest" when it comes to things relating to seacats, as it serves to make a distinction between being part of the community or not, but besides that I don't really mind being called whatever. Hell, call me John, Dave, Glen, or whatever you feel like, I don't mind much either way.
Also Amakusa is stylish, so that's cool too.

I tried to remember specific things about people that made them stand out, or just gave them some.. Christmas thing to wear.

Sub-groups? I just wanted everyone to be interacting in some way. But you could be right. When I was drawing them, it was a kind of a node effect. I remember one person and then connect that memory of them to another and then another and so forth. Which is why people are drawn so close to one another.

Perhaps. But then, nobody can really be impartial when you're asking them which of two people they find more interesting. Rather than making certain that someone is impartial, you should make certain that they are giving their real opinion.

Since this witness opinion by getting romantically involved with one of the two people, and calling the other ***, we can probably trust that their actions reflect their true preferences, due to the vigor with which they are expressed.

The people who find grammar harder tend to be people who have little experience in hearing the spoken or reading the written language before, and are just beginning to see what Japanese language is like and how it's structured. If you've heard the language spoken a lot before, or are exposed to the language on a regular basis, then you become familiar with it more easily and the grammar stops throwing you off as much.
Hell, I actually find Japanese grammar to be easier than English grammar in comparison. English has so many weird rules, rules about when to apply those rules, and then exceptions to the exceptions from the rules that it's just a mess to try and learn all of it.

Kanji is a great thing for determining what words mean in context; for example, I couldn't fathom trying to read a paragraph written entirely in hiragana because there are SO MANY homophones that it would be nearly impossible to try and decipher whatever was written without having the kanji to derive the actual meaning from. Having to memorize 2000-3000 though is pretty tough, and I never plan on writing any of it by hand so I just disregard stroke order completely.

>>31714
Hehe, usually when I say "legal drinking age" it throws people off because they assume I mean 21. Good eye for catching that, by the way.

Yes, I agree with it being less complex than English grammar. And obviously, the written language wouldn't work without kanji. I also disregard stroke order, although I hear it can be mildly useful in looking up kanji you don't know.

Still, kanji is something I'll never be able to make a dent in without a long-sustained effort, and sustained effort is not my forte. Not to mention that even after becoming relatively fluent, you'll still be learning kanji alongside vocabulary for the rest of your life.

Well, there's such an unimaginable amount of kanji that I imagine most Japanese people don't know even a half of all of them.
Sustained effort over a long period of time is my weakness as well, I try to grind about 20-30 new kanji a day but I often end up forgetting to do this for about 2-3 days at a time so I just end up reviewing 20 that I already learned previously instead so that I don't go forgetting them. I try to do at least that much daily, even if I'm not learning any new ones that day.

I see it as a sound investment of my spare time though, a second language looks good when applying for a lot of jobs and self-taught tends to look even better. Plus, I can't see myself becoming disinterested with anime, manga, VNs or Japanese music or novels at any point over at least the next 10-20 years of my life. If it helps make my hobbies easier to enjoy then I don't mind putting in the effort towards learning it.

My curiosity got the better of me and I ended up downloading Anki, and then installing the Kanjidamage deck for it.
Only after I started learning the kanji from it did I realize that I already knew a lot more than I thought I did. And once you get used to the radicals it becomes so much easier to recognize certain kanji readings by associating them with similar words. Some of them still don't make any sense whatsoever, though.

The thing is though, it's really not as big of a commitment as people make it out to be. If you're already familiar with some of the grammar then picking up the rest comes easily enough, and as for learning kanji it only takes about 20-30 minutes a day to memorize 15-20 new kanji at a time. Even less than that if you're a quick learner.
It's a decent way to kill some time as well, if you have an hour or more to spare every day then you could probably manage to cram as many as 40-50 kanji a day into your head, depending on the amount of effort/dedication you're willing to put into it; dedication which I am decidedly deficient in, sadly to say.

I've heard of kanjidamage and anki, actually, and my bookmarks are full of archived /jp/ threads about learning Japanese, as well as all sorts of miscellaneous resources. I generally don't visit them again.

I normally refer to http://pastebin.com/Y3eLSAqV when I feel like teaching myself something besides kanji, since it's full of good resources half of which I still haven't used.
Kanjidamage is a great deck for Anki. It takes a bit of an immature approach to helping memorize some of the meanings of kanji, but precisely because of that it makes it simpler to understand. It also leaves out things that are unnecessary for people like me such as stroke order, and groups the kanji that it shows you in order of ones that share the same radicals and/or have similar meanings or readings.

Well, it's still a difficult language to pick up though. Easier than English at least, I can say that much for it. Getting started is the hardest part, everything after that will either come naturally or become habit after a while. I still forget a lot of stuff and my kanji memorization is going at a slow pace (since 300-400 in 3 months is a decidedly low amount), but it's getting gradually easier the more I stick with it.
Reading untranslated manga and VNs is still a ways off for me though, at best I can understand maybe a third of what's going on based solely on context, machine translators, and wild guessing.

I actually used to study lightly nearly every day using smart.fm, but it turned into the iknow paysite thing.

Anyway, I I'm going to get some sleep. Good night.

See, good discussions like this are why I consider you like a comrade rather than a rival like is the case between I and Butler.

Goodnight then, it looks like this turned out to be a fairly longer and more productive discussion than I had thought it was since it reminded me that it's already 6 PM and I hadn't done any kanji grinding at all until now despite having been awake all day for once.

It seems I couldn't play AC2 and four fifths last night because of Ubisoft's DRM. Their servers were down so it wouldn't accept my username, or let me make a new one, or anything else.

When will paying customers stop suffering for the sins of those bloody pirates?

Hasn't the studies or research proven that games with DRM end up getting pirated even more because of the fact? And blaming DRM on Pirates is just an excuse really. I think Gabe from Valve had a lot of say on that sort of thing and said it pretty well.

But steam is DRM too, so what would he have to say about it?
>> No. 31772 edit
>>31771
I'm pretty sure I had plenty of times back in Steam's earlier hayday where I could still play my games even though steam was technically offline or I wasn't able to connect online (steams offline mode, which is a tad bit harder to use nowadays for example) Sure, I wouldn't be able to play multiplayer games, but most of the time I'm not using steam for multiplayer games. It is a lot harder nowadays if it went "offline" cause of its cloud system it uses, but I don't think a lot of the games on steam use that system yet either, and if it does, it's mostly for simple settings/preferences in options.

Yes, Steam IS technically DRM, but it doesn't really restrict you at all like most DRM try to do.
