I saw that on my first playthough. I thought I learned my lesson but I ended up going at war with my only ally of long date because of a misplaced atomic bomb.

Pretty chill with my current play though, everyone started a war on the expansionist bastard that is Darius and nobody is building any wonders ~

Plus I have a huge scientific lead that will probably lead me in the medieval era long before anyone else.
This game is so much fun !

The last game I played with Darius ended up with him actually being off-and-on "afraid" of me (yes, he actually showed "Afraid" as his diplomatic stance), and played basically as a small-Civ vassal to me, clearly scared of my silly little classical era defense force~ He was a minor power who was my friend, I helped him out by liberating a city or two of his and he gave me money and luxuries in trades and such~

Oda Nobunaga kept bullying city states under my protection until I decided I'd had enough of him taunting me and I gave him a good thrashing (but I didn't eliminate him, just destroyed his cities that were near the city states he kept picking on). Meanwhile, Austria was on the other continent going full city-spam mode with something like 20 cities. She was competitive with me for a while and actually had a higher score, though she was behind me in tech and no threat militarily~ I did eventually win the game of course, but I find Austria's unique ability to be extremely annoying, because you can't liberate city states that she annexes via "diplomatic marriage!"

Yeah, on one game, Nobunaga took my capital without any warning as we were the only two on our continent and pretty much trading.
Now in this game he actually made with Darius and is no far behind Darius as an expansionist.
I fear for my newly-build city which is just beside him.
I may make peace with Darius to improve this city's defense, but I fear that this will greatly endanger Swedish Ginger Beard who would be alone against a superior armed foe.

This is the kind of though choices that really makes the game shines.

I find that, in playing on King or higher difficulties, the early game rush is basically accepted as inevitable~ The AI will crush you just for having a weak military, even in the early game. However, even a small defense force of 2-3 archers and a similar amount of warriors (or spearmen, but I prefer warriors to upgrade to swordsmen later) is sufficient to hold the AI off, as they're still not terribly competent at combat--they're no longer overly suicidal like they were pre-G&K, but they are I think too conservative now. They don't like to attack if they'll lose a few units, even if they'll take a city by sacrificing some~ But then, maybe it just is a lot easier to defend than it is to attack~

With that said, I have proven that the early game rush is still quite possible for the human side, as my latest escapade with Rome proved--Washington declared war on me early, and after I repelled his attack, I upgraded my warriors to legions, gave them ballistae support, and took his capital and another city, before forcing him into a humiliating peace deal~

The AI is better in G&K, I think, but it still has quite a ways to go as far as tactical combat is concerned~
